  • Distance Learning "Composition"

I am looking for a possibilty to take composition/orchestration-classes at a school or university on a remote base. Since I am a working, there is no chance in Germany, since our universities haven't heard about the concept of "Extensions". When I was in the US, I used to take extension classes at UCLA on the weekend, but this possibilty does not exist here. Does anyone have informations to get classes in musical theory and composition ?

Too old for Rock n Roll. Too young for 9th symphonies. Wagner Lover, IRCAM Alumni. Double Bass player starting in low Es. I am where noise is music.
  • Holgmeister,

Maybe someone in the forum has specific information for you. I have two suggestions.

Contact the institutions and inquire about their extension classes (e-mail perhaps?) Also, study privately with a good teacher. If you can find a good "craft" composer/teacher who emphasizes the basics of harmony, counterpoint etc., this is the best, fastest way to learn. Arnold Schoenberg taught traditional compositional technique and principals (Bach et. al.) to his students even though the content became quite radical musically.

    Good luck in your studies,

  • I am a tutor for the USA division of MUSIC FOR THE MEDIA. However I have just resigned because my schedule was too thick with my own jobs. But I highly recommend this organization for distance learning scoring.

  • Evan,

Is this a good program for someone that has scored a few trailers or two and wants some more inside aspects and wants to learn from home?

    Thank you.

  • jonathan,

It's the only program for those requirements.

  • Evan,

What level of experience is the course aimed at? For example, if a person is extremely experienced in advertising, would the course be useful for learning how to address television scoring - or is it too elementary for that?

Does the course delve into composition and scoring, or is it more aimed at the business aspects of the work?

    Thank you,

    Rob Yale

  • Go to the website please. It's all there to understand.
