  • Solo Strings -> Kontakt Version Successful

It took a long time, but it's done well. Using CDXtract 4.1, most of the time I was doing something else and just let it convert.

I tried almost all the patches of the Solo violin. Everything seemed fine. The only "tweak" I had to do was to disable the ModWheel LFO (CDXtract adds that to everything even if it's not assigned this way) with the ModWheel patches. Which you can really do without if you have a volumn pedal.

The interesting thing is the total file size:

    Giga 34.5G
    Kontakt 28.9G

For the Kontakt version, since the samples are placed within just one folder, the same samples that are used by different patches won't take up more space. For example, the BASIC_SET.gigs for each instrument are actually just a collection of "the most used patches", but all of them take up another 1.2G.

I haven't had time to see if there's any more problem with the Kontakt version. I'll post it if I should find any.

    HOPE NOT! [[;)]]

  • By the way, the Solo Strings enhanced my confidence about the Pro Edition.

    YET!

Euro is rising way too fast...... Last year my girlfriend and I went to Spain, and by that time euro: taiwan dollar was about 34:1. Now it's 42:1.

    To me, last year the Pro Edition was € 5,490;
    This year it's like € 6782. (5490*42/34)

And I heard it's goona rise more for at least one year.......

  • Arys,

What patform are you using Kontakt on and how many instances can you load. Also, are you streaming?

    Thanks,

    Dave Connor

  • The file size differences are likely only due to the Kontakt files being on a smaller hard drive. Are these on the same drive? if not, I would actually be worried about the file size difference. The audio samples from VSL are uncompressed and would not differ even across platforms.

    Double check your conversions.

  • arys, you're right - 28.9 GB is exactly the size you would find for the EXS version. the difference between giga and EXS is, that gig-files contain every sample (independently if they are used also in another gig-file), whereas EXS links to a common sample base. your assumption about the basic_all is absolutely correct

  • I wanted to try this with Opus 1 to lessen the load on EXS 24 by using Kontakt on another machine. I can't extract the .exe files in the Giga folder on the Mac, even though I have no trouble with the .exe files in the EXS folder. Anyone know how to do this besides using Virtual PC?

    Thanks.

I'm running Kontakt 1.51 as a VSTi within Nuendo 2.01, under Windows XP Professional SP1.

DFD (harddisk streaming) is active, with the "normal" setting.

Last night I loaded 11 patches into 14 MIDI channels (3 patches loaded twice as the 2nd solo violin) so that was one Kontakt. The total file size of the patches should be around 4 to 5G, which took up 500MB+ of the physical memory. I got 2G so I believe it should be ok to launch another instance of Kontakt.

As for the polyphony, a sampled quartet should only takes up about 15 stereo notes max at the same time (overlapped notes + release x 5), so that shouldn't be a problem.

  • Arys,

Thanks for the information. I'm running a MAC (with two Gigastudios). It would be nice to get multiple instances and streaming on the MAC (G4) with Kontact but it's still not working great. Giga 3.0 should help a lot for streaming more sounds.

    Thanks,

    Dave Connor

  • bill, the archives in the EXS folder are stuffed with winRAR v2.5 (which can be extracted with stuffit v6 or higher) whereas the archives in the giga folder are stuffed with winRAR v.3.2 (need stuffit 8.0.1 or higher to unstuff on a mac). basically we never thought someone would like to unstuff gig-files on a mac, so this has initially not been tested.

    Christian,

Stuffit 8.0 worked just fine. I have never been totally satisfied with Kontakts translations, and since the Giga files were also on the CD I thought I'd see how well they worked compared to importing the EXS files. The more I mess with Opus 1 the more I find any one of my machines is not powerful enough to handle everything I want to do. So until I get a new machine I need to spread things out a bit.

    Thanks. It's a big help!

  • About VSL2Kontakt conversion:

    1) Do you have assigned things to Kontakt functions (alternate notes to the round ribbon) or are you on PC and use the Performance Tools?

That's something I forgot to test...... I've been working on an arrangement.

I don't want to install anymore virual MIDI driver so I guess it's impossible for me to use the Performance Tool (unless we got a MIDI plug-in version? [[;)]] ). I'll see what I can do to get around it about the repetition feature.

  • arys, i'm reading your post you're on a PC - you can use any virtual midiports you have already installed (MoL, marble, MidiYoke) to route midi through the performance tool.
to link the sequencer to the performance tool's inport there is also the VSL MidiRouter available in the tools menu of the download section in the user area.
how to connect the performance tool to kontakt depends on your setup - if you run kontakt standalone or not and on the same or another machine

  • Thanks, Christian. I've just figured that out myself and am going to post it as another article.

To Steff: Kontakt uses do not have to do anything to use the Performace Tool. Please read my other posts for details.
