  • Problems with getting sound in/out of my soundcard (Help?)

First of all I'm sorry to abuse this forum with a post like this that is not of VSL content, but there are so many good musicians in here, that I hope for guidance here... If this post is not tolerated, I understand its deletion.

I own the Nuendo 9652 DSP digital soundcard from RME/Steinberg, and recently saved enough money for a AD/DA converter (Flying Cow from Midiman).

Through my mixer I get signal on the Flying Cow input, but as I try to record on my computer in wavelab I get the message:

"Can not open wave device for recording. Are you sure your audio card supports the current specified sample rate and/or bit resolution? Check also if the input of your audio card is in slave or auto-sync mode."

I have connected the Flying Cow to my Nuendo 9652 through the SP/DIF I/O.

On my soundcard setup I have options as follows:
MME: Check input "on", monitoring "on"
SPDIF IN: Coaxial "on"(No Lock) (adat1/internal "off")
SPDIF OUT: ADAT1 "off", Professional "on", Emphasis "on", non-audio "off".
Clock mode: Auto-sync "on", Master "off", World Clock "off".
Pref. sync ref: SPDIF in "on", Adat1/2/3 in "off".
Sync ref: Inp. Master, Freq. 44,1 kHz
Sync check: "No Lock" on all Adat options.
    AEB: Adat 1 int. "off"

I can't get signal out, and I can't get signal in, so I truly wonder where I've done something wrong. All inputs would be greatly recieved!

    Thank you

  • I may add that on the AD/DA converter (Flying Cow) I can't get the D/A Valid Led to light up, so obviously it must be something with the soundcard...

Some time ago I tried to connect my hifi stereo to the digital soundcard, which resulted in a blast of blue sparks, and since then I haven't been able to turn on my hifi stereo. Might it be that my soundcard was damaged during this acciden?

  • Ah, got it to work. I actually had to put the black phono out on the red phono in... strange [:P]

  • [quote=Trefall]Ah, got it to work. ]

    Well done! [:D]

  • heh [:P] Ofcurse I have more problems...

I can't get any sound in Cubase SX. In Wavelab 4 and Reason 2.5 I get a skipping/chopping sound at playback, but in windows media player the sound is clear like a mountain river... any suggestions/help?

    Thank you.

  • Alright, so I found it is most likely problems with the ASIO driver, as I can't get the full duplex setup for cubase to run...
As a sidenote I had clear sound in reason as I was running the 2.0 version, but it started to crunch when I upgraded to 2.5, this same sound I get under wavelab also...

anyone know how to fix this please?

  • trefall, as you mention the steinberg card is basically an RME ...
for RME there are updated ASIO drivers available, which support *multiport* (means two applications can access the same sound device). maybe worth a try to look out for updated drivers ...
sorry if i didn't understand you right, but *full duplex* means record and play simultaniously, and that is not your setup, or is it?
    christian

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Thank you for the reply CM. I did already update my hardware with the latest RME drivers, but perhaps I should try to reinstall them yet another time...

Ah, so that is what full duplex stands for, silly me. I use i/o simultaniously when recording guitar and vocal, but that works already [:)] no problem at all. So it all comes down to get the sound out from cubase...

I also hear that the buzz amount may be the reason for my crunchy sound in wavelab/reason, but I already have it high... so doubtfully that would be the reason for my problems?

I am greatful for the answers. thank you.

  • do you use the spdif I/O for the AD-DA ?
try to uncheck the boxes in your driver settings regarding spdif out which are named "professional" (which i suppose only suits for aes type spdif) and "emphasis" unless it's clearly stated in the manual of this AD-DA convertor.
see if that gives you better results.

    hope this helps,
    p

  • Thanks. I got it to work now... the trick in Reason/Wavelab was actually to turn up the bus amount, and Cubase didn't handle the spdif driver, so I had to run an MME windows driver. But it sure has helped asking around, and I got answered a lot of other questions while at that... so thank you all for the help.
