  • [OT] Sad news from the US

    http://www.billboard.com/bb/daily/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=2030972

I can't believe it to be true. What a sad day indeed. I never had the chance to work with Michael, but I always thought I would. His theme to Robin Hood is among my all-time favourite pieces of music. It is certainly one of my earliest inspirations to get writing. I, for one, will miss his scores.

  • yeah, saw it a while ago... sad indeed... BoB's and Robin Hood are great scores

  • Did Mr. Kamen score "The Three Muskiteers"? That was a heck of a score and I thought it might be him (I saw a bit of it on TV.)

A very sad loss indeed. He seemed to be a very kind soul.

  • I did some orchestration for him a few years ago, and the way he worked was amazing. He'd look at the scene, ask for a click that hit a couple or three things, and then start playing. And he wouldn't look at the picture, but he'd hit the cues or get very close - i.e. the scene would be playing in his mind while he played.

Except that he wasn't just playing, he was really writing in real time. He'd make a few more passes over the cue - which he remembered completely from beginning to end - and then when it was done, hand it off to an orchestrator to take down and possibly tweak.

The next day he still remembered every note. Yeah, composers build up a vocabulary, but this was much more than that.

  • This was sad, I had no idea. He was a genious, I love his works. We have alot to learn from him. Question: The robin hood theme is used on a logo, I thought it was Universal but it isn't. Anyone who knows where this theme is used(which logo?) Other than in the film Robin Hood...

  • he did the new line logo

I like his commentary on the Frequency DVD

Makes me want to throw away all my giga rig and compose on a laptop, on a boat, with GM sounds..... ok maybe not the GM sounds [:)]

  • I'm even shocked too. More I can't say about it. All over the years he was a guarantee for high astonishing compositions, no matter if it was for film or for a rock band like Metallica, who wanted to stop the whole project first.

I think he will continue living in our minds!

  • oh yeah! Thanks.

Does anyone know what kind of keyboard Kamen used in his studio? Or hans Zimmer for that sake?

  • I've noticed his music over the years and how he was able to work in radically different media, from classical to rock to film. For a musician to be this open-minded and talented is rare and inspiring.
