AL,

if you're on a Mac, get AltiVerb from AudioEase, if you're on a PC, get SIR. Both are convolution-plugins. In any case, get the impulse-responses from Numerical Sounds, and you will have the finest "real" (opposed to: "artificial/pop") reverbs available today.

I agree 100% with Dietz. Note that SIR doesn't currently support 24-bit impulses, and you have to specify which bit-depth you want to purchase for the Numerical Sounds impulses.

Thanks for the tip with Numerical Sounds impulses! Thought I'd pass on, from having spoken at great lenth to Ernest at Numerical Sounds, that he strongly recommends 24 bit for this purpose - the low-level information is very critical. That would suggest therefore Acoustic Mirror rather than SIR. Anyone know of any problems with acoustic mirror? (Sound Forge).

Acoustic Mirror cannot be used in realtime, you have to use it to process a mix or submix. I prefer to make submixes of groups of instruments in Logic, import these submixes and align them with the other audio tracks or playing midi tracks, and then process the submixes (outside of Logic) with Acoustic Mirror from within SoundForge, 100% "wet". If you then re-open the Logic project, you essentially have a number of ambience tracks that you can mix with the other (dry) tracks.

During midi work I use one or two reverb plugins (4080L and Waves RenVerb), so I wait with applying reverb impulses until I make an audio mix.

Ernest's impulses are indeed best used as 24 bit files. I have the Classical Spaces and they are absolutely great!

Thanks Peter for that - If that's what you're using, then I can rest assured that it will work. If SIR works in 24bit then that's an option too I suppose. It means getting a different host apllication (VST) though... I wonder whether SIR works with 32bit floating point audiofiles. Ernest said if I understood correctly that you can with acoustic mirror - because that's another step up still that "would be audible"...

Is SIR better than the Samplitude's Room Simulation ?

I've been playing with the Samplitude demo today. It really is very good, and you can process in 'real' (slightly delayed of course) time - not possible with Acoustic Mirror (and SIR?...). Ernest at Numerical Sounds suggested Samplitude sounded slightly better than Acoustic Mirror. He had given up on SIR after trying an earlier version.
I'm tempted to buy Samplitude. I've never regretted spending a bit more on vital tools like this before...
Anyone done a comparison?...

This is quite an exciting area I think!
