Great idea! This has always been a complaint of mine about big sets. I think offering single instruments from sets would be fantastic!

I would buy the solo trumpet and flute tomorrow. [[:D]]
Each instrument would contain all its samples from the performance and cube sets.

I guess pricing would be tricky. I mean, now that I have used it, I would pay a LOT of money for just the flute legato!!
When you have the library, you realize that yes it's an exxpensive library in terms of money, but it is extremely well priced, you are getting a LOT for your money. I think overall the library is priced as low as possible, I really thought it would cost more but I am very glad about the pricing because it makes it accessible. Having more users increases the community for it and that is indeed a great thing.

I wouldn't think so. herb states the VIP price is based off of the number of new samples from first edition. Granted this is probably a divisional number based off of the estimated samples instead of the actual sample count. It wouldn't be too hard to take the total number of samples of the cube and divide the price by those samples to get XXX (do the same for the performance set), take the total number of samples in the flute and flute ensemble in the cube and PS to get YYY, and then multiply XXX by YYY. You'd get a true cost based on the number of samples in the flute. (It seems like right now herb is charging about 2 cents -- 0.01929103 -- per sample for the first edition and 1 cent per sample -- 0.01361352 -- for the pro edition on the old pricing system whereas it's just slightly higher for the first edition { 2 cents -- 0.02122638} and pro edition { about 1 and a half cents-- 0.01442823} samples.)
Then, I'd see where it comes out at -- if it's something like 78.21 for the entire flute I'd would make it either 79.99 or 89.99. That would make sense from a business standpoint (cost of running extra discs just for the flutes, packaging, etc.) and to the consumer. If someone's really interested in the library they will save up for the whole library, but if someone really only wants one or two instruments then this is the way to go. Granted, they pay more per instrument, but that's the price you pay for that little luxury.
Or at least that's how I see it, even as a consumer. Honestly, even at how low the pricing is even if it doubled you'd still be getting your money's worth as the price per sample beats almost anyone else I've seen. I could be wrong though.

Herb, this is, IMHO, a very strong point!
I, for example, have been wanting to buy some good orchestral samples for a while now. The VSL seems to be head and shoulders above anything else on the market, especially with its Performance Tools, and expecially cos I use Logic Audio and the EXS24, so that's what I ultimately want.
I've written a lot of pieces for ensembles using 12 different instruments, so I'd be VERY happy to be able to buy just those instruments, including their performance sets. But some of those 12 instruments are only in the Pro Edition.javascript:emoticon('[[:(]]')
I know it'd cost more *per instrument* to buy instruments singly, but US$3090 (which is AU$5143 here in Australia) for the First Edition of the Complete Orchestral Package is WAY beyond my budget! [[:(]] Not to mention US$5490 (AU$8305!!!) for the Pro Edition.
So for now and the immediate future I'm buying nothing, because I can't afford any useful (to me) chunk of the VSL.
I can easily imagine that MANY other people are in a similar position to this, so I hope you and your accountants are listening! [:)]

First off, howdy all.. my first post here. [:)]
I'd like to second this notion of selling individual instruments. Think of all the hundreds (thousands?) of composers, some of them hobbyists, who are not able to afford the full VSL package (either Perf Set or Orch Cube). If I could buy just a VSL clarinet, for instance, that includes the samples from the Perf Set & Orch Cube as Leon suggested, I'd be glad to sink $150-200 into that.
Just my two cents.

hmm, in my opinion (just as a guy who shovels data) it is too early to bundle single instruments - at least some of them need completion before selling them as single products - just because i don't want manage updates for 50+ instruments [;)]

And allow me to second Sam's thoughts. I'd love to be able to spring for Pro; but I also like to eat - and right now, those two options seem mutually exclusive. [;)]
So being able to slowly jump into VSL, even though would end up costing me more in the long run, is an option I'd happily embrace.
