  • Dropped notes and note-off problems using Performance Tool

    Hi,

    I'm experiencing problems running 8 simultaneous tracks through the Performance tool in Legato mode.

    Often, when I press stop on my sequencer, notes remain sustaining.

    Also, I am experiencing many dropped notes, across different tracks. When solo'd, all notes are present and correct, but when playing as part of an ensemble, many notes fail to sound at all.

    Neither of these problems occur on tracks that are not being routed through the Performance / Legato tool.

    Although I run 2 dedicated machines for Giga / VSL, this is happening on the slower of the two - a 700mhz PIII with 1 Gb RAM. My sequencer is running on a separate Mac.

    Are there any known issues like this with the performance tool, or plans to release a new version of the tool?

    Currently I can only run about 4 or 5 tracks of Legato instruments on the 700mhz machine before running into dropped note / note-off problems. I have tried a different MIDI interface, but the problem remained.

    Any feedback much appreciated.

  • Without more information about the specs for each system, it's difficult to say. Based on what you've written, the only technical statement is that above 512MB RAM, Win98SE becomes unstable. As a simple test, try taking out one memory module. Otherwise, we need more stats to help you.

    Second, what version of the Performance Tool are you using? Do you have the latest update for 1.1?

    Thanks for the reply. I don't know why I forgot to put my OS in that message - both my PCs are running Win XP.

  • Just to correct one thing here, Win98se handles up to 1GB without any problems. If you have more than 512MB though, you should add some lines in system.ini, to make sure the VCache only uses a specific amount of RAM, or Windows can/will behave in odd ways.

    Sorry, Simon, the 512MB limit I cited came directly from Microsoft. We've tested Win98SE above that level and it does become unstable. This doesn't mean that it doesn't operate. I have one system with 768MB of RAM running Giga 2.5. Others do have 1.0GB RAM. But for troubleshooting, for us at Truespec, we start with the specs given by the manufacturer to see where the problem may lie.

    In fact, on our Giga systems, we moved to XP rather than stay with 98SE because to give customers 1GB RAM or better and maintain our 3 year onsite servicing and free parts replacement on the main computer, we had to go to XP rather than stay with 98SE specifically because of the posted 512MB RAM limit.

  • Due to Microsoft's knowledge base Windows 98 is not designed to handle 1GB or more RAM.

    In theory it could handle 4GB RAM !

    I worked 1.5 years, considering the corrections above, STABLE with a 1.0 GB Intel machine on Windows 98 SE.

    BUT there are some technical flaws which have to be corrected manually by the user. Further only 512 MB are cached.

  • Very cool, I'll send these to my partner. However, please carefully and thoughtfully read what I wrote.

    1. The VSL customer had a problem with an unidentified OS.

    2. Thinking it might be 98SE, and keeping in mind some issues above 512MB RAM could arise (not knowing his specs), I suggested he look at his RAM levels, and to TROUBELSHOOT (meaning to work through the problem methodically) by removing RAM to the suggested level.

  • Where is the update for the newest version of the performance tool? I checked the users area and downloaded that tool. When I started to unzip it, I saw a date of January 30, 2003. I opened the tool that is currently installed, and could not locate any version information.

  • If you click on the little performance tool icon right at the top left of the tool - in the corner of the window bar - this will open a little menu with 'Info uber VSL MIDI tool' at the bottom. Click on this and it'll take you to the version information.

  • Hehe, if you take a look at the microsoft support page that Markus posted, it lists all these awful things that can happen to your computer... then it states "this behavior is by design."

    My error completely. The 1.1 update is in testing. I TOTALLY MISREAD a post on the beta forum. Please accept my apologies.
