    Does anyone have an idea which software is best at matching the tempo of existing recordings or of your own playing? (making the sequencer tempo follow a "free" recorded part.)
    Cubase 5 allowed this in a characteristically obtuse way, but I've noticed that SX doesn't have this feature at all which is very unfortunate. Is Sonar or some other software good for this sort of thing? (I'm ignoring Logic because I use a PC.)

    Any help, as always, is appreciated.

    ProTools has Beat Detective, but that would only assist you if you could break out the percussion track (assuming the piece even had a percussion track).

    I don't think there's anything out there that makes this task exceedingly simple. Logic, which you're avoiding, does have a number of things you can use to accomplish this, but it does take effort to map out a song in this manner. It also depends on how accurate you need to get (i.e. I sometimes quickly map out basic bars when I'm working on orchestrating or sweetening tracks provided by others, but I don't need a high degree of accuracy in that case because I'm not syncing anything to it).

    SONAR has a Fit To Improvisation function that does that. I have never used it though.

    Interesting, I'll try to check out Sonar. I wonder if that feature is similar to what was in the old Cakewalk software (which I used to use before I switched to Logic, then Cubase.) The only reason I switched to Cubase, incidentally, is that it has all the scoring features I need.
