  • Intro, please

I've recently decided to try to learn about computer-based music composition and have obtained a copy of Sonar XL 2.2 and a Echo Layla 24 (as well as my computer, of course). Can I use the VSL libraries with Sonar software or does your product only work with Tascam's GigaStudio? I see a copy of GigaStudio 96 on eBay right now at $189. Would this version work ok?

Also, please give me a very basic intro to what I can do with the combination of one of your VSL libraries and GigaStudio. What other hardware/software components do I need (e.g. a MIDI-compatible keyboard)? What about my own talents...if I have an aptitude for composition, harmony, etc. but lack keyboard skills, am I pretty much out of luck?

Thanks very much...I've found it quite difficult to get started in this field, due to the techno-babble factor...I need some basics.

  • Hello Aviroger,

A sequenzer, like Sonar, is not enough. You need Gigastudio or EXS MKII to work with our library (EXS MKII is a software sampler plugin for Logic - also a sequenzer programm)

I would say Gigastudio 96 is Ok. Our library needs much RAM but is not really polyphonic hungry. The main difference between Gigastudio 96 and 160 is, that you get 96 voices out of Giga 96 and not a maximum of 160.

I would also post this question in our Gigastudio forum, Kevin and David can give you really competent support.

Don't worry, if you are no piano artist. I can't play either (a former cello player). That's why we got sequenzers with wonderfull score and paino roll editors. It's of course helpfull to be a good keyboardplayer, but it's not prerequisite for composing with sample libraries.
