  • A virtual midi driver solution on Xp/2000

I was reading about a few people having trouble getting the Performance Tool to work together with a sequencer (or scoring program) on the same computer. The problem is that there isn't any way to connect midi between the programs except by installing a virtual midi driver. Midiyoke on NT/2000/xp has sometimes been troubling (midiyoke 95-Me is excellent) and was the only freeware solution for Nt/2000/Xp. I just released Maple Midi Tools at www.marblesound.com, which is freeware, and it includes virtual midi drivers as part of the install (If you happen to have an older Maple, uninstall it first - this won't affect any plugins). You don't have to use Maple to use the virtual midi ports, though I'd recommend running it once since it can fix a bug related to Windows midi. I believe the drivers (virtual midi ports) are very stable and high performance and easy to use, but of course I'd say that [:)] So give it a try if you're having trouble and it might play a role in getting things setup right.

Also, Maple (which is a plugin host) lets you optionally install a Layering plugin and a Midi Control Surface plugin, both of which I think can be nice to have in addition to the Performance Tool.

    Hope this helps!

  • cool Jeff

gonna check it out soon. Already Dloaded [:)]

  • thank you jeff to provide this great stuff to the community!

now finally we overcome the limitations regarding W2K/XP

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Jeff, do you feel it's OK to use Maple on the same system to sync Cubase SX and Samplitude so that I sequence in SX but record in Samplitude?

  • Hi Peter,
Sure it should be ok to use the Maple ports to send midi from Cubase SX to Samplitude. If you're explicitly using midi synch messages, I expect this should be ok too, since Maple would just pass on the synch. But as a disclaimer to anything I say on midi synch, I only have a passing knowledge of it and I've never actually used it. Let me know if you've got other issues involved in synching up CubaseSX and Samplitude, and I'll help where I can. Smpte synch I probably wouldn't be much help on, but I'm guessing it doesn't involve your set up since you record everything in Samplitude.

  • One way of dealing with this problem without more software is setting all ports to none in GS and using the performance tool midi in and out port to your hardware ports in and out, but then hooking those to midi in and thru on your master controller, thus creating a tunnel out of and into the computer. Of course you can only do this after you've finished playing in the notes to your internal sequencer and are merely playing back recorded performances.

  • checked it out Jeff

    neat stuff.

You know what I'd like to see, is an "invert" box on each of the controllers, so that I could invert what is sent to them.

Howabout a controller matrix/xfade editor with the layer plugin..

    ...

imagine the xfading possibilities on that one [:)]

also a feature like "keyswitch" from yellow tools could be cool....

even cooler if you could input prg change numbers for each keyswitch you want.

    man...

you got me thinking again... thanks... [:P]

  • King,

I don't know if you use Logic at all, but with my Virtual Maestro-Tools layer you are exactly capable of :

    1. Using up to 4 "makro"-keyswitches to switch MIDI-channels (like yellow-tools, but playing LEG/EXP-patches you won't run into jumping dynamics and/or hanging sus-pedal-events). A new extention for VSL I beta right now also incorporates virtual EXP-like-playing for the p/f VSL-legato-layers via CC11 and MW-to-velocity-mapping. Contact me in private if you like to check that.

    2. Using 2 predetermined keyswitches to send out a burst-set of 4 prg-changes for up to 4 MIDI-channels. This way you are able to A/B two 4-channels-sets for the keyswitch-(multi-mode)-playing.

just to let you know - in case...

  • you'd think that being the geek that I am, I'd use Logic, but I dont [[:)]]

I'm a cubase user. Its jsut that it would take time to relearn logic, and I've been spending the time elsewhere.

not to mention I dont want to move my sequencing over to the mac to get new features as it grows.

I'm sure I could do EVERYTHING I want in an app like Building Blocks, but I'm only asking this of Jeff so it can be shared among ALL Giga users. [[:)]]

  • King,

of course this was the best way to go. For me Logic is a cool workaround for tools that do not really fit my needs, but as the tools will evolve and become more stabil and powerful, I would of course prefer to be able to stop fiddling with MIDI-events myself. I wish VSL would decide to support Maple with an (improved) Perf.-Tool plug. And it was really nice to have multi-channel-switching capabilities within Maple - not only to realize true-dynamic VSL-legatos. This Perf.Tool is currently going on my nerves: intemittently hanging notes until you reload the .vpl is no real fun when you are in production... I hope they will come up with an update soon.

    All the best
