Midi Panning for orchestral music???

Hello,

Well the online studies are wonderful, though I am wondering if you could put up a midi file with a standard orchestra panned according to a standard orchestra's seating plan? I for one would love this as I am not sure if I am panning things in the correct position. This would help all users that do not know standard panning settings to make more realistic sounding music.

Hi Adam,

a friend kindly forwarded me panning guidelines for the most standard hollywood setup. here they are:

Piccolo flute: Somewhat to the left
2 Flutes: Middle to left
3 Oboes: middle or slightly to the right
2 Bb Clarinets: middle
1 Eb Clarinet: middle to right
1 Bass Clarinet: right
2 Bassoons: moderately to the right
1 Contra Bassoon: right next to the bassoons

6 F Horns: Left towards center (and in the back behind woodwinds but in front of percussion)
4 Trumpets: Right but not too much
4 Trombones: Right (It's also common to use 3 trombones where one of them is a bass trombone)
1 Bass trombone: Right next to the tenor trombones
Tuba(s): Heavy right (behind contrabasses - but a little more left than the basses)

Timpani: To the left
Percussion: varies a lot
Harp(s): To the left or on left and right
Concert grand: Left behind violins next to piccolo flute

1st Violins: Left
2nd Violins: Left towards center
Violas: middle towards right (gently overlapping celli)
Celli: Right next to conductor
Double basses: Heavy right

This is just one of many different seatings for orchestras, but this is pretty much the standard in hollywood.
Remember that orchestras have different setups depending on how many musicians there are, how big the hall is, what effect the composer or conductor wants etc.

Your search for a 'sound' and ears are the final judge. For me, I like having the piano right (between celli and double basses). I like that 'stringed' instrument away from all the other string instruments for balance (harp, 1/2 VL, etc.). But that is just me. I like the listing above for woodwinds - I'll give it a go.

Don't forget: There are also "pannings" of depth. Not every instrument plays in front of the stage. To have an overview I'll send you two pictures with orchestra-sets. > So you sould use also different roomdelays...
