  • Tipp for Multi-Machine-Setups

    Hi everyone,

as I have the impression, that some of you around here seem faced with the task to set up a Gigastudio multi-machine-setup for the first time; I just like to spread the link, where you can download a demo of that fantastic money and time-saver "MIDI over LAN":

All you need is an off-the-shelf 100MBit-ethernet-connection for this tool (hubs are fine for a usual single-master multiple-slave array). Then you are able to send MIDI using up to 32 virtual MIDI-ports from whatever PC to any other in the LAN without having to buy (and connect) a dedicated MIDI-interface for each machine. Latency is amazingly low (<2-3ms), it runs stabil on all machines I have built yet (XP and Win98SE). The only problem I try to fix right now is, MIDI over LAN is crashing Win98SE, if I use synchronous DC-30 video for external TV within Logic Audio. The DC-30 and the MIDIoverLAN-drivers seem to collide. All other known configurations work perfectly well and without ANY hangers, glitches or the like. One of the best things: it costs you only $49,- for the whole network. One of my favourite applications this year!

You can get the demo here to see if it works for you:

Btw. MoL provides local pipes, too, so I think you don't even need MIDI- Yoke to set up local virtual-MIDI-connections...

    All the best

P.S.: If you need more information about hardware-related things and details about what users found out regarding MoL or the like, consider searching the GS-forum at http://www.northernsounds.com.

... but i'm convinced, you cannot blame MIDIoverLAN for this [;)] miro-(or pinnacle-)drivers never have been working flawless even in dedicated video-machines. i've put it (just for fun) into a XP-system and it works better than ever with the latest W2K-drivers.

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Hey cm,

you are certainly right with your assumption that it is not MIDIoverLAN to blame. Your hints toward running my video-sync-system under XP are of course very interesting for me at this point. Did you talk about the DC-30 in specific or a different Pinnacle-product? Why I am asking is, that up to now I was a little anxious to switch my running 98-system to XP, maybe just to find out, that the DC-30 won't work well with the 2k-drivers. So if you were talking about the DC-series, this would give me just the perfect kick in the a** that I needed to take the time and move to XP at that machine, too.

Thanks a lot - a short reply would be great...
