  • pre-mastered demos, and other questions

    Hello to you all,

I'm not yet a VSL user, but will be in the near future - I have a couple of questions, though...

    1) Is there likely to be a HALion edition? This is my primary sampler in my Mac studio.

    2) Has anyone tried and had any joy in converting the Giga files to HALion?

    3) Is the Performance tool a stand-alone app? Mac or PC? or does it live inside Giga/EXS24? Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere.

    4) Is there any chance that we may hear any of the demos in various stages of workflow? Maybe each bounce separately, and before EQ-ing/reverbing and full Mastering? It would be interesting (for me at least) to hear the samples in their natural form - for comparison with the finished product.

    current setup:

    Mac Dual G4 867
    2Gb RAM
60 Gb sample drive (seperate to OS and apps)
    Delta 66 OS 9 and X
    Cubase 5.1 and SX
    HALion 1.1.3

Thank you for your time in reading/answering these questions - I may be asking more in the near future, as my studio is about to move to a better facility, and i may have to purchase some new toys - Giga/Logic...?

  • Uh, nothing? [:(]

I guess the most important questions are 3 and 4 - re: performance tool, and the possibility of hearing 'naked' unmastered demos...

appreciate any reply...any at all !

  • I think (not sure) that there isnt Gigastudio for MAC. Dont know will it be transported later. I've tested converting GIG files to halion, and mostly doesnt work that well, only the 'basic' programming is converted, missing nice layering with mod wheel and stuff [:(]

Dont know about VSL, i guess it's out of my reach [8-)] ..... so AO have to do the work for me [H]

Anyone tested NativeInstrument's Kontakt for streaming GIGas?

please consider, it has been *night* over here [;)]
ad 3) yes it's a stand-alone component as it's sitting between your sequencer and your sampler.
there is a windows-version already delivered (gigastudio & exs) and a version for EXS on mac (os9 for the beginning) is under development
    best regards, christian

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • 2) Has anyone tried and had any joy in converting the Giga files to HALion?

In the orchestral cube are all instruments mapped also as "basic instruments", that means no keyswitch or modwheel controllers are necessary to play with them.

This files could be imported into Halion without any problems.
I'm not sure, but I think the latest Halion version handles release triggers also.

If yes, you could import the RELEASE TRIGGER mappings also.

For the performance set you need a sampler which handles keyswitches.

Maybe we'll do something similiar with our next bundle of demos.

    best wishes
    Herb

  • thanks Herb, and all who replied (sorry, forgot about the time difference!)

I will look forward to hearing any unmastered demo-work, and hope that Steinberg's next release of HALion will support KeySwitching, or it's a GigaPC for my next machine... [:)]

Since I first posted, I have had some success with the demo CD basic instruments that Time&Space sent me, so it may well be a near-future purchase!!

    thanks again,

    Peter

  • So I've been reading the HALion manual... and I've figured out how to Key Switch (I know - you Giga guys have been at it for ages), so I loaded the demo violins and celli from the freebie CD, and I got Keyswitching to work in Cubase on a Mac!

Okay, so HALion's mod wheel x-fade is not so hot, and your alternation tool sounds pretty impressive, but I think I'm onto a winning argument to my boss that this is our next library purchase!
