Driven by the fact that my primary DAW has died, I'm investigating how to start getting ready for Windows 64 bit computing. To clarify all the issues I've identified, I'm posting a decision chart / check-list.
I'm not sure if it is correct, so input would be welcome input from forum members.
(I've drawn a flow chart, but don't know how to post it here. So here is just the text.)
Thanks
Is my Infrastructure ready?
- Is motherboard 64 bit ready?
- Can the motherboard physically accomodate more than 2 gig RAM? (or however muchRAM I want?)
- Is CPU 64 bit?
- Is intended OS 64 bit?
Is it safe to change? What functionality might stop working?
- Is my DAW compatible with OS 64, even if only in 32 bit mode?
- Will my plug-ins continue to work?
- Does the soundcard have reliable 64 bit drivers?
- Does my midi controller have 64 bit drivers, or is it proven to work with new OS?
- Does my control service have apprpopriate drivers ?
Okay, assuming we have "yes" answers to all of the above....
Could I actually take advantage of my new 64 bit system?
- Is my DAW 64 bit ready? Can it actually use 64 bits?
- Will my plug-ins be able to use 64 bits?
- Will stand-alone instruments / intrument hosts be able to use 64 bits?
Are there any gaps?
Can anyone suggest any improvements?
If someone can help, I'll produce a chart and postit?
Thanks.
