  • Recommended DVD Drive for VSL Discs

    Hi All,

I've had a heck of a time reading the Strings Disc 2, and I've read others' posts about difficulty reading the various VSL DVDs.

I would be very grateful for some specific recommendations for a new DVD drive. I'm leaning toward the Sony DRU-510A, but would appreciate any suggestions you may have based upon "what reads the VSL DVDs most reliably".

    thanks, and best regards... ...jim

  • i got the sony DDU1621/C1 dvd rom which works well .
AVOID LIKE SARS ANYTHING MADE BY LITE-ON.

  • jim, as we've learned the hard way, the quality of DVD-drives and (unfortunately also) DVD-ROMs may vary within a certain range. so recommending a drive is risky anyway.
we have had no problems so far with pioneer, sony, ncr, asus, plextor, toshiba (not the older ones), hp. we noticed problems with some LiteOn and some older superdrives and toshiba as well as with several no-names.
but to repeat myself: there is no guarantee not getting a what i call *monday-device*

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Copying is working now as well with my PLEXTOR DVD drive!!!!

BUT it takes me now about 1 week to copy the files and I just finished the perf files!!! [:'(]

    That's no good... [[:|]]

But it will for sure be worth the sounds!!! [[;)]]

  • Hi jkashner,
I also own the sony DRU-510A - not cheap, but it works well. It saved my day, after I got problems with nearly every VSL disc using my silly odd LiteOn drive. [[;)]]

  • Thanks everyone for your suggestions. Sounds like the new Sony may be a good bet - I'll think I'll give it a go and "keep my fingers crossed".

And as an FYI, the drive that could not read VSL Strings 2 disc was a ("vintage" :wink[:)] Hitachi GD-7500. And, the only drive that could read VSL Stings 2 disc was another "vintage" drive, a Samsung SD-612. Both have their latest firmware installed on them and both are set up for Region 1 - go figure.

Christian - I hadn't heard "monday device" before, but I like it - pretty funny, and descriptive metaphor. [:D]

  • Are there really that many different manufacturers of these drives? Usually the major names are just "branded," I think - i.e. does Sony really build the drives? I have a generic Monday device in my Windows machine, and it works fine (except for the one file that crosses two layers, which I had to read in my Mac's Superdrive and send over).

  • We get this question all the time, and actually, the two drives we most recommend you can get at Best Buy: the Sony DVD ROM and the Samsung Combo CD-RW/DVD ROM.

  • Hi All,

Just wanted to report back that the Sony DRU-510A DVD drive is reading all of the VSL discs without any problems (so far :wink[:)]. Thanks much for your suggestions and advice.
