  • Large VSL VI system with Logic Studio?

Currently, I've got my VSL VI's spread out to four PC's using RME ADAT cards, hooked up to a PT HD Accel system via HD 192 interfaces. I'm running Logic to control everything.

I'm starting to think with Logic 8, Leopard, and 8 core Macs, I could do away with the PT hardware, and have a simpler and less trouble-free large Logic rig.

For anyone currently doing this, what would be the optimum way of digitally bringing 4 to 8 external machines running the VSL VI into Logic? Would the RME MADI system be the way to go? Would the MADI system work well with, say, one additional Apogee Symphony card for 16 analog i/o's. Or, is there something else out there that would be a superior interface for a lot of ADAT ins?

  • I was thinking the other way around. I thought the "All in One" solution is to unstable.

What is the problem with the PT Setup? I thought that having a separate "Recording Only" system would be more stable, especially with HD192.

Also, when I remember, the talk was with MIR as external hardware, your RME/ADAT way would be a better way to connect in future.

  • Lee, presumably the need for 4 (5?) separate machines is a result of RAM limits per machine, or is there another reason?

As soon as Leopard is out, this limitation should disappear, and there's no doubt that current Macs have the CPU horsepower to run as many instances of VI as you need on one system.

FWIW, I'm running Logic Pro on an 8 Core Mac Pro with the VI strings, winds and percussion, and ProTools HD on a 4 core Windows XP machine along with the VI Brass. I personally prefer to mix in ProTools, so I route all my audio out of Logic and into ProTools HD in realtime using MOTU interfaces on the Mac and Dig 192 Digital interfaces on the Windows machine.

If I could run more than 3-3.5GB worth of VI samples on the Mac, I'd gladly move everything over to that system, and I'm sure it could handle it. Somebody just posted that Logic 8 no longer has the RAM limitations we've been stuck with so far, so perhaps there's even a chance of this becoming reality pre-Leopard. Personally I'd still choose to mix in PTHD though.
