  • Bouncing question

When you are mixing pro ed with VI I assume you bounce 24 bit anyway?
Do you normally bounce the highest bit?
What's the danger in bouncing 24 bit when the lib instr is 16 bit?

  • No danger.

It's like putting 16oz water in a 24oz bucket. The contents of the bucket are the same as if you'd put it in a 16oz bucket, but the 24oz bucket takes up more physical space.

That's my very rudimentary understanding of bit resolution, but I'm sure some brilliant Viennese computer brainiacs will chime in...

  • Guy,

Remember the VSL Pro Edition samples are 16 bit but any automation within your DAW will still be at 24 bit (well actually 32 bit in Logic) so for example if your loudest 16 bit sample peaks to -12dB but there is other stuff in your mix peaking to 0dB then you will have an effective 24 bit dynamic range. Your dynamic range would only effectively16 bit if the VSL 16 bit sample was being played back at the peak level of your work station.

    Hope this makes sense!!

  • It's always a good idea to stay in the 24bit (resp. 32bit floating) domain until the final mastering stage. Modern DAWs have no problem with mixing different input bit-depths, as the usually work in 32bit anyway.
