  • Is it right, that the PFL has a dynamic range of just 14 db?

I´m asking, because I´m having troubles with my piccolo Flute:

Either it is to loud in the silent parts of my composition, even if I play at a velocity-value of 1. Or, if I lower the volume of the PFL-track, it is not loud enough in the loud parts.
So I´m wondering, if a dynamic range of (with all faders left at 0 db, without effects, etc.) from about - 18 db till round about -4 db is right and realistic, or if I set something wrong in my Logic.
Of course I could use the track automation, but I´m not sure, if I should, cause I might be expecting something of the PFL, I should not, cause this instrument doesn´t have a large dynamic range.

    Thanks for your help!

  • In my default VI setup the dynamic range in the edit cell field is set to 12. Should I change that to a higher value does the pic. Flute have such a small dynamic range?

  • Felix, you know the old joke that a piccolo flute has just two modes: loud and very loud!

    ... sorry, I couldn't resist.

I'm pretty certain that the mapping of the PFL was done like that on purpose.

  • piccolo is the ace in scoring when there is need for extra emphasis.
they even stick out against full brass action.
this is the purpose. being highest and loudest.

serves a similar function as harp does in moderate moods: icing on the cake.
(Claude D.: not your chamber pieces !)
