  • VSL Podcast - Show 39

A new show in a new home.

After an exhausting month of moving and toiling with trying to get my studio rebuilt it's now all up and running and the Podcast can resume. I have a nice new show for you all encompassing some thoughts about sequencers, (as I have Cubase 4 which I've been testing out for VSL mixing), use of controllers (for the "Preserving the stream of thought" thread), and some thoughts on what you can try to do should you lose your muse for writing new music.

No chickens were harmed during the recording of this episode ..... but I did leer at them and shake my fist a lot ... (You'll find out!)

So check it out .. and I hope you like.

  • While I do own Kontakt which comes with VSL samples, I was really looking forward to purchasing a VSL library but I think it'd be better in my current situation to put my money into Bela D Spiritual Wind and ProjectSam TrueStrik2. It would be a killer combination after all and together I'm only paying less than $700. I don't have a keyboard yet so that's why I am still -$650 into buying any libraries.

And while I'm happy, I'm sad that I won't be able to amaze anyone with my ability to use VSL libraries for a while... of course maybe I wouldn't have amazed anyone anyway. [:@]

Now, I was originally planning on buying SE but I realized how much I'd rather have the full deal of VI I instruments. I decided not to spend any money on VSL libraries till I can buy a FULL edition VI I instrument. But they are dang expensive and I would like to have more than just a set of chamber strings.

LoL, oh yeah. You are thankfully very close to pronouncing my name correctly. It's said like A Lawn (grass in the front yard). Sorry the mix is so quiet. That's one thing that shows my noobieness I guess. Anyway, thanks for the podcast. I've been a bit of a depression having to deal with college, job, homework, and not having any money for libraries. Your podcast definitely lifts my spirit.

  • Hey. Sorry if you're pieces were quiet .. that's probably more my fault than yours as I put this show together quite quickly and didn't really pay much attention to levels as I usually just look at the waveforms to see if they clip .. I know lazy of me. I promise I'll keep more attention on this in future.

And of course your always welcome back to the Podcast anytime you like.

Funny enough I'm actually have some really great sucess with the SE and using Velocity crossfade controllers .. I'll have a demo of this in the next show . and how I did it for those interested in this new way to control velocity. It's not so bad as I thought once you know how to get into it.

My point being that if you buy the SE .. which lacks a lot of dynamic samples .. I find that this short coming is not so bad because with Velocity crossfades you can do a hell of a lot.

Anyways .. glad the show helps to pick you up, and I think your music work is coming along nicely.

  • I enjoy your last podcast.

    Keep them coming.

  • I did too, except for the changing of you useing logic as your main system. LOL, [:O]ops: , O well its always good to learn new things. But no matter what you use, make sure you watch out for the chicken police.

  • Damn Chickens ::fires gattling gun into the coup:: ::Feathers fly!::

Well Logic is just a pain for the mixing stage. In fact I recently discovered some useful features in Cubases pan that really allow you to do some great things in regards to Stereo Width. Gonna talk about that on the next show.

I still have to use Logic though. Sadly I still need the EXS player.

Anyways, glad you're enjoying the show.

  • haha, I forgot I sent you that email.

    Ahem, it's pin-ard...not pine-ard...it's all good [:P]

    hmmmmm LOGIC 8...

innovative surround panning controls, multichannel tracks and busses... [:)]

  • Woah! .. new forum format .. weird but likable. Anyways, yeah Logic 8. I've been asked about this a few times already. People asking my opinion on whether or not they should buy it or upgrade. I haven't tried it and I'm not planning to get it for a while for these reasons. It hasn't got any upgrades for orchestral positioning and depth that I can see so for me this upgrade is rather pointless. If I had an Intel Mac I'd go for it as I'm sure there's loads of features that go nicely with the Intel chips. Also if you've got an 8 Core Mac I think his new logic will probably be better suited to running on those systems .. more than version 7 anyways. It's probably a cool upgrade but it's a little expensive for me to get right now. After having just upgraded Cubase I'm not out to spend any more money as I'm quite happy with Cubase 4 now. If anyone gets Logic 8 do me a favour and write a review .. record your comments on an audio clip if you like and I'll play it on the show. Be nice to know how this new Logic performs .. The Logic that they said wouldn't be called Logic 8 ... but is :D Anyhoo, let me know. Heto
