  • A/B switch question

    Friends,
I'm a bit confused on the A/B switch. The switch does work, but when I switch to another articulation, I cannot choose different notes for the A/B switch. So, if I want my strings to crescendo down, but I am using the legato strings for the first few bars, I receive portamento style. The A/B switch seems to be for EVERY patch in the matrix. How can I make the A/B switch work for each individual patch.?? What am I doing wrong???

  • Yes, the A/B controller recieves every patch which has A/B mappings included.
If you switch between two different patches which both have A/B mappings included, you have to set both controllers (patch switch and A/B switch)

  • Herb,
Thanks for the quick reply. Just to clarify..... In order to make the A/B switch work in the context of playing the patches using A/B, one must create two different matrix files. So, if I have VI-20 perf-legato 4 vel A/B/ leg/porto, I create a "patch" and save it as a martix file. Then I create another patch VI-20 dyn-me 2s A/B cres/dim. Select two different notes for A/B and save that one in another matrix slot. This way you can have 2 different A/B notes for your articulations using the A/B switch.

  • Hi Mike. I don't mean to cut in on Herb but yes, switching between two matrices does enable you to leave all the patches in Matrix 1 playing their 'A' settings while all the patches in Matrix 2 play their 'B' settings.

But as Herb says, you can achieve the same effect more simply within a single matrix by inserting an A0 or B0 note to switch the articulation any time you switch between patches.

Example: Create a matrix consisting of Appassionata Strings VI-20_perf- legato in cell 1A and VI-20_dyn-me_2s in cell 1B. Use keyswitches C1 and C#1 in the H-Span to switch between cells.

Use these notes to select the articulation you need:

    Performance legatos: C1 + A0.
    Performance portamentos: C1 + B0.
    2-second crescendos: C#1 + A0.
    2-second diminuendos: C#1 + B0.

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious!

  • I'm going to add a further example though the previous speakers did a good job!

    ______________________________________________________

    Example1 "A/B-Switch"
Load a Cres/Dim - Articulation (Dynamics) in your Matrix.

    A/B-Switch: Key* C3 = Crescendo
    A/B-Switch: Key* C#3 = Diminuendo

    _______________________________________________________

    Example2 "A/B-Switch"
Load a Run - Articulation in your Matrix.

    A/B-Switch: Key* F1 = Run upwards
    A/B-Switch: Key* F#1 = Run downwards

    ________________________________________________________

*It is up to you to select a Key of your desire or to take the default setup (A0/B0)

    All the best

  • Thanks to all for your suggestions. I forgot about the power of the other "cell". I will give all your examples a try.

    Thank you again, and again.

  • One of the best tricks with the cresc. and dim. patches is to use velocity to switch. That way you can play them as normal; quietly for the cresc. one and loudly for the dim. one. I also use this trick on velocity xFade String instruments for the protamento patches, as this saves having to put yet another row of keyswitches.

    Hi Mike.

That's the beauty of the VI - you can have up 144 cells in a matrix, 12 in a row (horizontal) x 12 deep (vertical). To create more empty cells, just drag the bottom right hand edge of cell 1A.
