  • Noise Bursts with VSL as a VSTi in Cubase

Using Vienna Instruments is becoming difficult. I keep getting very loud bursts of White Noise during playback of MIDI channels with Vienna Instruments VSTi. It happens randomly but it's very alarming & not good for my speakers or my ears!

It only happens to me when i use VSL & only in Midi. Never in Audio.

Is anyone else having this problem? I can see no mention of it in this forum thus far.

I have tried a number of things to solve it without any luck so far.
    (1) I've changed the PCI Latency Timers for UAD Cards & Soundcard. Though this is not directly effecting things MIDI wise though it was worth a try.
    (2) I've moved the VSL Sample library onto an External Drive USB2 instead of reading the files from the Same hard disc that my Music Project folder is on, to reduce burden on Disk Reading.
    (3) Installed all the latest Drivers for VSL, iLok, Syncrosoft, Cubase, Lynx Soundcard.
    (4) Loaded up a utility program called Ulyssus that tracks RAM, when the White Noise happened I still had 1.3G of RAM available.
    (5) Increase Latency to 256 then 512 in mixing sessions.
    (6) FYI, I have a Dual Core with Hyperthreading disabled
    (7) The Word Clock appears to be stable (Mytek Word Clock with the Lynx AES16 chosen in Cubase).
( 8 ) I've updated the BIOS with the latest Drivers (before & after no difference)
    (9) I dont suspect that this is being caused by my 2 UAD cards as I only ever get the problem on MIDI Channels.
    (10) Ran Memtest 86 without any problems (RAM Test).
    (11) Running 2 seperate Dongles, one for VSL & one for Cubase (before was running both VSL & Cubase off the same dongle)

Things I havent yet done, but i've heard can work to solve this problem:
    (1) Turn off RAID 0 (unsure how to do this at the mo anyway)

Any further thoughts be greatly appreciated!!

    Many thanks

    James

My system is D955 XBX ATX Motherboard, Dual Core Intel P4 D950 3.4Ghz, Seagate SATA Hard drives, ATI Radeon X300E Graphics Card, DIMM DDR2 1G x 2. Lynx AES16 Soundcard, Running Cubase SX3.1.194

Try not doing that. You need them on an internal drive. USB2 is not good as a realtime streaming interface.
