  • Hard drive advice

    Just picked up some toys...
1- MAC book pro 17 with 7200 rpm drive and 4 gig ram
    2- APP. strings
    3- tc power core
    4- Rme 400
5- Pciexpress 34 adapter. to fire wire.
    .....
    My question..[:)]
I have the audio interface connected to the bulit in fire wire port on the MBP.
the power core is connected to the PCiexpress card .
what would be the best solution.
Should I use the bulit in hard draive or use a USB 2 for the strings.
I will have some other instrument Styles etc.......
I am only going to use the app strings maybe later chamber stings .
    Thanks for the advice.

  • Any Thoughts

  • That's a lot of stuff running on a laptop. Connectivity is a challenge where a relatively limited number of options are available.

I wouldn't advise running the samples from the internal HD, and USB hard drives are also not a first choice because of variable transfer rates. While eSATA would be my first choice for a VI drive, it requires an eSATA card for your PCM slot and limits your FW options.

    Get a good fw drive....

Run one device from the computer's fw port, and hopefully you have more than one fw port on the card to handle the rest.

  • Unless I'm mistaken, your RME (Fireface?) 400 is engineered to be able to (properly) handle placing a firewire HD in the chain. I would at least test out running a good firewire drive, chained to the RME. I think that's your best bet.

    J.

  • Doesnt the Macbook Pro have a FW800 slot? If it has, I would suddenly use that for the VI samples, preferably with a raptor HD in a chassis.

  • the MBP has an 800 but the 400 and 800 fiwire are controled by the same buss controler.

I talked to ILIO here in la and they said it would be ok running the APP from the internal drive.
