  • VSL famous clients/projects

Perhaps I missed this browsing around the website, but it would be interesting to know about some of the commercial products/movies/plays etc, that used VSL.
Is there sort of a client list somewhere? Anyone know of any big movie using VSL?

  • Yep, I checked that link, but that seemed to be more like projects that VSL are involved in as a company, though I might be wrong here?

As you say, I would assume there are lots more..

  • Well on that list you will find both "Danny the Dog" and "Underworld"... Both relatively big.

But genrally the larger the production the less likely samples are to make it into the final mix.

  • I know of several movies where VSL samples are included in the final mix of a score and we're not allowed to say it. Producers, directors, or conductors very often don't like to admit that a score includes parts that are not being played by a real orchestra. So we're happy about our success that composers do add our samples (I even know of solo parts and sample-only transitions) to real orchestra recordings without anybody recognizing it.

  • Bill Brown composes the music for CSI:NY, and we're proud to say that he likes our samples enough to create several dedicated "Elements" percussion-pieces not long ago [:)]

BTW: Apart from movies, you can hear our Instruments in quite a few recent, highly popular computer-games.

In the end, our point-of-view is that our _users_ are the stars, not us. [:)]

If you check out Hetoryen's last podcast he interviewed a Hollywood composer, John Frizzell, who I believe made extensive use of VSL in his last feature film.

I'm not even a bit surprise.

I actually emailed Jeremy Soule asking if he used VSL because of the flutes that he has in his scores sound like like it. He claimed he created the samples himself.

When it comes to games however, I'm working on a game right now. And I'm using VSL on it for sure.

  • Jeremy Soule does use VSL samples, like Apassionata Strings, but nowhere near the point of saying "exclusively". 90% of his samples are a custom made Sample Library, which I'm DYING to get my hands on. Never will, but still dying.

  • I seriously doubt that anyone doing better known film work uses any lib exclusively. There just isn't any one lib that does it all best. Most composers that I know of use a wide mix of all sorts of stuff. I'm sure some of VSL is getting mixed into all sorts of projects, but you would hard pressed to know what and where it was used.
