  • REAL BEGINNER-quick question

    Hello all!

I really hope omeone can answer ths simple question. I just got my vienna special edition and am astonished by it-but now I want to create a sequence in DP using of course a lot of instruments. I thought vienna would work a little bit like garritan where you define the midi channel output, but i don't see anything like that. How can I create a sequence for full orchestra then? I am a little confused..thanks a lot!

  • The VIs are a single midi channel instrument - not multi-timbral like some samplers - so you have to use one instance per midi channel. The idea is to really think of each VI like a single instrument, or section, and create presets accordingly. So you might make a template (a song in DP) with something like Fl, Ob, Cl, Bsn, Hn 1, Hn 2, Tpt, Tbn, Tb, Vlns 1, Vlns 2, Vlas, Vcls, Cbs - each on its own midi channel. All of your patches can be accessed within that single channel, via program changes, keyswitches, CC changes, and so on, so you don't need to use extra channels for different articulations.

    Does that make sense?

  • Thanks for your reply! I see. so in case of dp, say i need 16 instruments, i would need to load up 16 midi channels AND 16 instrument channels each one an instance of vienna with the strings, woodwinds etc.?

thank you again and sorry for the dumb question [:O]ops:

  • what i mean is: in order to make a sequence in which there are more insturments sounding at onece, you need verious instances of vienna open. I am just not used to this concept and fear my computer will complain.. let's find out! [:)]

  • I guess it depends on your hardware, but the VIs are pretty light on the CPU. They're harder on the HD/RAM/bus than the processor. 16 instances should be fine on any relatively recent Core 2 Duo machine. Older P4 machines may give you some pops and clicks at busy sections, but you could always freeze tracks if it's a problem.

    good luck.

  • I don't know how DP works but if you're using the VI as a plug-in you shouldn't be limited to 16 MIDI channels - because each VI is a separate instance it will only respond to MIDI data on its own sequencer track, so you could have all the instances set to MIDI channel 1 if you wanted. (At least, that's the way virtual instruments work in Logic!)

True... I wasn't thinking about host-based stuff, as all my VIs are on slaves and thus need midi channels. Within a host channels are pretty much irrelevant.

    Hi Filippo
I have still installed all the VI-Tutorials. Maybe they can be very helpful for you.

It is about "how to come from a midi file to an audio file.
For the rest you have to wait 6 days. Have a look at "New Tutorials" on my website as well...

    Hope it helps
    I wish you success
