  • Sync issues when VIs are loaded

So, I've run into an issue that could put a cork in my little string sequencer box. Please tell me there's a fix.

I've had issues with what I thought was "sync" between my Akai DPS24 and Nuendo2. After a lot of troubleshooting, I've found that the MTC sync is never even a frame off. But, some projects were audibly in sync....others were not. Some were WAY off.

It has to do with the Vienna Instruments. Load one, and the audio lags. Load another--it lags more. I've tested most of the other virtual instruments I have--some a single instrument is even more demanding. Akousitc Piano...Electric Piano (w/o disk streaming enabled uses like 700mb for a EP)...BFD...none of them cause this issue. Only the Vienna Instruments. Could it be that you're not reporting some latency proerly to the host...and it's guessing? Or you ARE reporting correctly and a 256 sample buffer isn't enough to handle a single instance?

I also have the issue I've seen posted here about the audible "sputter" when you press stop on projects where they're loaded. While searching the forum, I found that...I did not find anything about a resolution--just metnion that swapping a graphics card fixed one. That's still a bug that VSL needs to fix if their plug in is the only one "sensitive" to X graphics card. As a stop gap, at least publish a list of known offenders. I'll tell you mine to add:

    Radeon 9600 All IN Wonder.
    Intel 865Perl mobo
    1.5gb Mushkin CAS2 RAM

I just bought Cubase4 for when I rebuild the machine (soon)...I may have to install it on this Windows install to see if it has the same issues, though...

Tell me this is old news and there's a fix. [:O]ops: [:(]

  • Update. I've tried going into plug in info panel and turning the latency compensation OFF for the VSL plug. No difference.

You don't even need to load any samples into the VI. Just loading it into the VST INstruments "rack" will cause the delay. If you do it during playback, you can even hear the audio go out of sync once the plug fully loads.

Grabbing at straws, I noticed that I only have a few VSTi's that are VST version "2.0" in Nuendo. EVP73 (old Emagic plug), the VSL VIs, and Atmosphere is it. So, I ran the other two v2 plugs thinking that may be it. Nope.

  • Watching this thread with interest - the "stutter on stop" issue is driving me insane (Cubase SX).

Haven't had sync issues so far, thankfully.

    Mike.

  • I'm admittedly an oddball in my setup...I record the audio to an external system. So, this machine basically stays MTC sync'd to sequence MIDI along with the audio...it was a bear to track it down to this. I thought I was crazy. One minute it's in sync...then it's not....then the next morning it is....all dependent on whether the VSL Vis are loaded.

So, when the audio's in Nuendo, there's no sync issues. But, when it's external--it goes out more an more depending on the VSL usage.

I've loaded my Cubase4, but apparently, I did a bit of configuring to N2 that I don't remember...I'm having trouble with it all together. We'll see how it sits in the morning.

  • I've got C4 up and running now. I don't know why, but I think it's more of a pain to configure the MMC than N2 was....anyway...

It appears that both problems are gone. I'm getting no sputtering on stop. Sync seems to be tight. I did have an issue with it early on during config-doing the same thing. I checked the "use system timestamps" under the MIDI config--something that wasn't in N2.

So...preliminaries look good--but it did have the same sync issue...something I checked seems to have taken care of it.

And the freeze function in C4 will come in handy. It will actually freeze all the channels that might be piped to a single VI combi...takes seconds to freeze....seconds to unfreeze...actually, you should find out how they reload the samples, because it takes C4 a shorter time to reload frozen sample banks than it did to load them in the first place, FWIW.

I will post more if I discover more or run into it again while scoring these two songs.
