  • Any way to fake string staccato repetitions with SE?

I wish I had the real VSL strings, but I don't!

Anyone have any tips on how to fake semi-convincing staccato repetitions? I have a celli ostinato part that sounds "not good" with SE. Tempo is 16ths at 112.

Any tips would be much appreciated!

    Thanks,

  • I have a similar problem myself. It sounds like it is oscillating between two machine gun effects. Have you tried playing with the filter at all? Slightly moving the filter up and down a bit seems to help a bit but I would be interested in hearing other ideas to.

  • I ended up using the Cello ens 8 (stac 1+2 alt x) from the Kontakt 2 VSL library )in Kontakt, of course). Much better results than anything I could come up with in SE. I guess it's a good indication that having real VSL repetitions is the best way to do it!

  • hi all,

what comes to my mind is similar with the filter idea... trying to use as much different samples as possible (even if these would not be a "real playing" at this point) using different key regions (velocities) and later edit gain of each staccato note... double them with other intrument patches and different combinations in different velocities to have slightly different sound at each note... hell lot of work, though [:)]

(i am not sure about the content of se, does it have different sets - 8 violins and soloviolins?) then play i.e. 8 soloviolins with different articulation to each violin..
less authentic playing (would be a chaos orchestra [:)], but maybe a bit more realistic, living sound..)

    just an idea...

    cheers

  • I agree with Pulse777.

IMO you could try using two patches (on 2 different midi channels): detache on ch. A and staccato on ch. B. Then assign to the detache the first of each group of four notes, giving it a higher velocity (i.e. a metric accent), and the remaining three notes to the staccato patch with a light decrescendo in velocity.

To vary the above pattern, try to assign to the detache track first and third note in the group of four (always with a slight accent on the first note), and, randomly, a detache note here and there instead of mechanically repeating the sequence detache-staccato-staccato-staccato.

Feel free to experiment with velocities and positioning of the two different articulations.

In the wait for a (probable) future "VI SE Performance Set", the trick could even work... [;)]
