  • More than 17(or so) instanzes in Logic

How could it be, that the best Sample Orchestral Library on Earth could not be loadet more often in Logic Pro (latest Version ) on a Mac Pro?

Hey!!! I want an Orchestra and not a Chamber Version of my Symphonic Cube!
I wanna play every single Instrument at one Time! When will this be possible
and whats the problem? I can load more than 50 instanzes of every other Product on the market!

I have enaugh Ram and enaugh Power but how should i do a Filmscore at this time?

    Thanx Manu

  • Most users who want to run a large orchestra either score one section at a time on one computer or they have 3 or more computers in a network. There is at least one thread where a user is using 8 machines and still has to leave out some articulations.

    It's a large library.

There are limits to how much can be loaded onto one machine, the maximum amount of RAM you can access when using the plugin version is about 4GB, and probably less before voices are dropped-- at least that's my experience. That leaves over 500GB of unused samples.

As for comparing it to other sample libraries, you might want to also compare the size of the samples VSL-VI uses compared to other libraries. MB to MB, VSL requires more resources. That's part of the reason why it sounds so good.

I loaded about 40 instances of the console on my MacPro. They were all empty, but it shows that the amount of resources needed to open an instance is relatively small. It's the numbers of samples being used which determines the limits.

I'm adding a third computer to my network now and will wait to see when VSL goes to 64-bit before adding a fourth or a fifth. Being able to access more RAM, especially on a MacPro, will (or should) prove to be quite beneficial.

  • Manu, how much RAM do you have and what Mac are you running? You won't get an entire orchestra on one machine, but you can probably get more than you're getting.

I like your playing, by the way.

  • i have 2x 3 Ghz Dual Core Intel Xenon Mac with 7 GB 667 Mhz DDR2 FB-DIMM Ram
But my Logic "System extent of utilization" is at about 40% with 17 Insances of VI
    Thanks Manu

  • Logic tends to cause the VSL server to still require cpu resources even when an instances is bypassed or frozen, which is weird, and even if it has no samples loaded. By comparison, in Cubase, if you freeze a track, the VSL server use of cpu resources go down, so in logic no matter how many tracks you freeez, you will run out of cpu but in cubase if you freeze tracks you effectively remove the instance, and you will not run out of cpu resources at least until your machine has so many freeze tracks it just can't play them back which on a mac pro like that is probably like 250 stereo tracks at least!!

    Miklos.

  • What are you loading? You not loading entire collections are you? Don't load the matrices that are included, load the seperate patches.

I can run more than 17 on my 4x3.0ghz macpro. I do have to bounce after a while, but that's when I start mixing with space designer and other plugins.

Also depends how thick your who mix is. If you have like 33 tracks playing the same thing your going to need to bounce.

Also, keep in mind MacPro's are limited until OSX Leopard comes out with 64-bit.

Not to mention the new Logic hopefully will fix some of the bugs that happen in logic.

  • Manu, the trick is to run stand-alone instances outside Logic as well as the plug-in version.

    There's a thread here...

    (will search and come back)

  • Thanks! I´ll try! keep you posted! Manu

  • manu, just for consistency: shouldn't we merge your two forum accounts?
