  • Looking for info and history of A.Lecompte,Paris Oboe

I am looking for information and the history of an Oboe that I purchased a year ago. It is made from Rosewood and has A. Lecompte,Paris stamped on the bell. The fingerings on this oboe are simpler than a modern oboe. I need to find out more about it as I would like to play it. Then I might be able to find the appropriate music for it. Anyone who can help, please do! I can not find any information about it on the internet. It must have been made in Paris, but I've found nothing. I hope someone out there has an excellent knowledge of oboes-historically, who can help.
    Thanks

  • I think an oboe manufacturer could designate you Lecompte oboe easely by construction, bore, and by the key system. I don't think that even an Oboist could tell you anything about your instrument based on the information you give, except that it is most likely a Paris Conservatoire Oboe.

According to some french websites, Arsène Lecomte, and his company A. Lecomte et Cie, Rue St. Gilles 12, Paris was a manufacturer of music instruments until 1912. I have seen some cornets and clarinets made by this company in the Wind Instrument Museum, but never an Oboe of this manufacturer. The development of the oboe, and what composers wrote for the instrument during the last three centuries, is well documented, also on the internet.

  • Hello Angelo!
You are a star! Thank you so much for pointing me in the right direction. I found my oboe information. I had the spelling wrong. I don't know if I will be able to play it with other instruments that are modern, but I have enough to go on for now. He did make oboes out of rosewood with nickel keys. I feel very fortunate, as I don't think that there are too many around. I love music and this will be my joy to play.
