  • Routing VI Audio into DAW

When running VSL VI audio from standalone into my DAW (DP 5.11 on Mac G5 using an aggregate audio device via Soundflower), it appears that there is only 1 stereo output. Assuming one VI for each instrument, how do you mix audio levels of each instrument in your DAW. Pre VI, I just used multiple outs (16) from Kontakt 2. Still trying to get my head around the workflow using VSL VIs.

  • It appears that I will need to use a host of some sort -- VStack, Bidule or AULab. Is it that difficult to make a working AU Lab mixer with 16 outs?

  • The problem with running a host is that it doesn't have a separate memory space, i.e. the plug-in shares its space among multiple hosts.

I have to say, this would be my number one feature request for the V.I. Player: the ability to address specific outs.

  • I was going to post a separate topic, but this thread seems to be on point.

My question concerns running Vienna Instruments on a separate PC and routing the audio to my Mac. Right now I'm running Opus in Gigastudio. It sounds like running VI in standalone mode is not as efficient as running VI as a plugin in, for example, Digital Performer on my Mac??

So, what's the best way to take advantage of my separate PC and replace gigastudio? What would I have to have on my PC to efficiently run Vienna Instruments?

    Thanks for any help!

    Hello mkelly,

you want a VST host like Forte that hosts your Vienna Instruments. Forte is also officially LAA (Large Adress Aware), so that you can use up to 3 GB on your PC [:)].

More infos on how to turn your ex-GS-machine into a VST host for the VI´s are to be found here.

    Best,

    Paul

Great! Thanks Paul, I really appreciate it.

  • Okay, I'm confused. We're talking about a G5, right?

  • Oh.

    Nevermind.

    Sorry. [:O]ops:

  • I was talking about a G5, but PC issues are cool too. [H]

I cannot even get the audio to route from the stand-alone VI into Digital Performer. The midi goes in properly; the VI visually indicates sound is being produced (center rings move). I can use the VI inside DP as well as standalone with outputs to Built-In Audio, but no go using Soundflower.

Any time I set up an external VI, I get a warning that the audio engine has changed. Presumably that is where the issue lies -- that mu audio card is being bypassed. In addition, any attempts to open Soundflower to adjust settings results in that app hanging, as well as something called VSL daem... Not sure what that is, maybe the VSL server.

    Any thoughts?

    Sorry about the PC tangent.

So to clarify, are you getting audio when the outputs are routed to Built-in Audio?

Where are you trying to route the audio to DP using Soundflower. Since this is all o n the same machine, why not just run VSL as an instrument track within DP? Perhaps I am misunderstanding your dilemma.

  • In order to access more than the amount of ram that the Mac OS can handle per app, I run a standalone outside of my DAW and route the audio into the sequencer, per the excellent article featured in Nick Batzdorf's magazine Virtual Instruments (highly recommended!).

I had been using the VSL collection that comes with Kontakt 2, running 4 external instances (one for each section) routed into DP 5.11 and without any VIs inside DP. This is only possible because K2 has multi outs. Since VSL VIs only have stereo outs, and I have no other means to route audio from a VI (although Nick's article reveals other alternatives), I am stuck with one external instance via Soundflower until VSL allows multiple outs (listenig VSL?). LOL!
