    I just lost a data drive on my rack PC and installed a new one. Everything is all back in place but now I'm having problems with anything VSL! When I launch the Dir Manager and do any function I get an error window that says: ScanTool.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close, blah blah. I can set the custom folder options and all is fine. I can even delete dir locations (and then it will crash) or add a dir (and then it crashes), but when I launch it again did the process just exits after. When I launch the player I get the message and if I launch a VST app and it gets to the VST plug I get the message and it will exit. The only thing it tells me is that when you look at the contents of the crash it says that its a Error Signature problem and it tells you that its AppVer:0.0.0.0 and ModVer:0.0.0.0 I have upgraded to the latest from the downloads and I got the same. Before the data drive went down it all worked great.

    Is it missing an XP .dll some where? Seems to be a common lib call to anything VSL.
    (just a guess, not a real programer but played one on TV [:)] )

    Any help would be great, I can copy (if something is missing on the XP side) from the other PC's since I keep all of them to the same update level. All of them are SP2 btw)

    please try the following:
    reboot - uninstall vienna instruments from START-settings-control panel-add/remove programs
    search your C:\\ drive (or wherever you might have programs installed to) for *vienna instruments.dll* (note the space!) and remove them manually
    reboot again and re-install the latest vienna instruments software.

    in case you receiving a message like *could not remove [something]* or *no sufficient permissions to [do something]* write down the details of such a message to investigate closer in a second run.

    years ago i had a similar effect with another software when i changed my password and continued to install then without rebooting .... something similar possibly happened during your re-configuration?

    I un-installed everything and made sure that nothing VI was left. Re-booted and then installed again. Right when I installed the software it complained about the scantool.exe during the install, same message as before (error signature).

    question: did the install complete though (means: are the program menues there again and is it listed in installed software)?
    to be honest: i've never heard about an *error signature problem* - has it really been this wording?
    is there any norton or other anti-virus app running?

    Yes the install completes and all the files and programs are there. Its only when anything VSL trys to run, or in the case of the Dir Manager, any of the functions are run. There isn't any virus or other background programs running. [:'(]

    Ok, this is as far as I have got. Removed (in the dir manager) all the refs to the VI dirs on the data drive. It would exit every time I would remove one but it would do it. Then when all was removed the dir manager would run fine and the stand alone player would launch just there were no listings of course in the main preset page. When I tried to copy all the libraries to a new folder it still wouldn't work. Is there a pref file that it is having a problem with since the old disk had the same name "D:"? Its close but not there yet.... One more clue is that the older disk was formated for FAT32 and the new one is NTFS.

    Addon: When I took one of the libs and put it on the system drive it all would work, FAT32 vs NTFS?

    Got it! Seems that once I moved all the VI libs to another dir (different name as before) then tried to add them to the dir manager it would error. Then I moved them to a new dir that was called the same name as the original "named" dir (after deleting it then creating a new with the origanl name) it worked. Had to be something to deal with permissions like you said cm I think. Thanks for giving me a forum to express my crazy XP rants [[;)]]

    good to hear you're up and running again ... it's kind of refreshing to have an XP permission issue here too [;)]
    my recommendation for drive formatting is (as always) NTFS with an allocation unit size of 4096 (you can check quick format in the respective dialog)
