    What are your "go to" cds for baroque, classical, and film?

    Baroque: Bach's Brandenberg Concertos
    Handel's Oratorios such as Messiah etc.

    John Eliot Gardiner is a great conductor of this period with excellent recordings.

    Classical (Symphony): Mozart (35-41), Beethoven (3-9), Haydn (82-104)

    George Szell, Bruno Walter, Zubin Mehta, Esa Pekka Salonen, Bernard Haitink all have great recordings.

    Film: Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Danny Elfman, David Newman. Pick you're favorite score. There are re-recordings of great scores such as Herrmann's Cape Fear (conducted by Elmer Bernstein) that are excellent for reference.

    Mozart, Piano Concertos 20+. Late Symphonies
    Beethoven, Symphonies 3-9, especially 3

    Not a film composer obviously but Stravinsky for the sound ideal I'm usually gonig for.

    From an _engineer's_ point of view, I'm always happy when the artist / composer / producer brings in his own reference recordings, as I'm better in understanding his whishes (which may or may not (!) be reflected in his/her work) like that. As soon as both of us have found a common language, we can start to develop an aestaethical vision for the piece in question.
