  • Sibelius 5 and Logic Pro

    Hello,

I am very adept at using Sibelius, and I await the release of Sibelius 5 happily. I have just bought Vienna Instruments because I've started composing pieces bigger than I can record.

I'm very new to all this virtual instruments method - it all seems incredible.

My question is: I am fine with using Sibelius, but at Logic I am a complete novice. Can anyone offer me advice - is it easier to write scores in Sibelius then import them (through MIDI, or are there other ways?) to Logic, or should I just write the scores in Logic?

This is with a mind to eventually recording using Vienna Instruments.

I will want to use Logic sometimes, because I want to record piano and/or violin in some of my pieces in addition to the Vienna Instruments.

    It's a bit long winded..

Thank you for any help anyone can offer.

  • Unfortunately, Sibelius 5 still hasn't included sync options, so syncing Logic to Sibelius still won't happen. This is a real shame, as working with both Logic and Sibelius at the same time would be great. For me, I find writing to score is just an entirely different experience to working in a DAW like Logic. I think differently in front of a score. So I will always write some things in Sibelius first, then do any DAW-ish work - recording, mixing, and so on - as a separate process in Logic.
I'm kind of surprised that Sibelius still hasn't really worked in any system of integration with other environments - ReWire would probably have been a good option, as well... So many composers now work with hybrid systems, passing audio/midi between different apps, it's hard to understand why they haven't opened up this possibility to their users; I suppose they just directed their resources to other things... Anyway, until they do, we're kind of stuck in some sort of two-step process.

Are you really surprised? Do you know who owns Sibelius? [:D]

  • hehe... good point!

Still, it seems like they're lagging behind the general trend, which seems to be leaning toward interoperability. And considering they've just released a shiny, new version, the lack of any kind of syncing is quite a disappointment. I've loaded up my old copy of Finale more than a few times, in cases where I wanted a proper scoring interface in my Logic work. Kind of a bummer, really.

The inclusion of VST/AU support is a real plus, though, and may offer some openings for a kind of hackish integration... I'm going to look into that when I have more time - it may be possible to get some sort of communication running over the loopback interface this way. Not sure exactly what I'd do with it, though! [;)]

The first (big) job will be to write a SoundWorld Instrument set for my VI template. That's going to be a bit ugly, as I really hate looking at xml... But to have a working set of Instruments directly supported in Sibelius, with all the automation of articulation selections and control changes it implies could be absolutely brilliant! The excitement of that alone will keep me going through the grunt work, I think.

  • The Sib folks are about to release a users sound set editor. they are also working on a sound set for Special Edition.

there will be many people, myself included, who will want sound sets for the various full VSL gigs.

So I would hang on as they've said the sound set editor should be available soon.

  • ooh, thanks for the heads-up!

I had a quick exchange with Daniel a couple of weeks ago, but I was under the impression that it was going to be one of those highly conditional "soon"s... you know, the kind that can take some serious time? Maybe not quite like the Mac version of FX-Teleport being released "soon", but you know what I mean! [;)]

If it really is soon, that would be brilliant. I'm looking forward to it!
