  • midi mockup

I am just beginning to do my first midi mockup of Ravel's In the Woods.
I am using Horizon Series instruments. I have noticed that the music ask for muted pizz violins, muted pizz violas, muted cellos and muted pizz bass. I do not see those in the Horizon series. How have other users handled this problem?

    Thanks Vanessa

Nice to meet you here, Vanessa. Hi! [:D]
Let's assume that muted pizz = pizzicato con sordino.
I don't know whether these pizz do have a leading and important melody or if they are more in "the background" of the music.
First case: I would leave the pizz at that. Don't spread around that you should take muted pizz samples.
If the strings have their pizz more "by the way" then you can try with an EQ to get the "damped pizz"-sound.
    Hi cut at 1kHz 12dB/Oct? 2kHz?, 5kHz?

    Sordino
There are different systems of sordinos. But all of them you have to tuck put, stick, shift on/at/over the bridge of string instruments. You also can take a clothespin (so do I) because you are able to remove it very fast...[;)]
All of those different sordinos do stop the waves of the strings on their way to the body - just when they want to pass the bridge.
Because of the clothespin the bridge can't swing so the string sound is suddenly "muted" (before it reach the wooden and amplifying body). The tone of the instrument is darker now because above all the overtones are suppressed. > That's why you can try to get a similar effect with a hi cut filter (EQ).

If it's possible give a feedback
about your experiences, please > thanks

    Good luck

  • Hi Beat:

Thank you so much for your response. I puchased Horizon series last year. I am just starting to do my first mockup. Since I had not gotten a response, I have been looking for something else to work on. I'll get back to the music saturday. I'll send you a response on my experiences next week.

    Thanks Vanessa

  • Beat: I have studied some of the tutorials on your web site but I have not done an exact midi mockup of what you have done.

Since I am just beginning I am going to do a midi mockup of yours this week so that I can get my sounds right then I will branch out.

    Thanks Vanessa
