Simsy, much depends on the total amount, the type of drives and your arrangements - do'nt consider to recieve significantly more than 25 MB/s from a single drive. what is stressing a disk and producing the most heat is movement of heads, so to spread the symphonic cube across 2 drives would be a clever decision anyway and prolong the lifetime of your disks.

the other thing is the complexity of your file-hierarchy, less directories need a little bit less time to be scanned, but might worsen the view of content. grouping together orch strings, brass, woodwinds I + II could be a compromise

Thanks for the reply, I am just looking ahead, as I do plan on purchasing the entire cube as funds become available. Would spliting the sections - Strings, brass, woodwind, percussion over 4 drives then be slower than 2 with the directory searching?

Also, would you mind having a look at my other tread about sustaining notes.

well, the *average* computer ourdays has 4 sATA ports (and i'd recommend sATA drives anyway) - so maybe you want to keep one for system and programs, two for samples and one for recording.
or in case you keep three for samples then strings, brass and woodwinds could be a good distribution (spread percussions to brass and/or woodwinds)

wherever possible avoid firewire disks (need more CPU than sATA) and don't use USB disks at all unless in case of *emergency*

all this is just a suggestion - your milage may vary - and mostly more important is an overall clean system.

easy - after installation of your library spread the .dat-files to any convenient location (not on the system disk of course) - then run the directory manager to familiarize the VI with the new locations (see the manual or the video tutorial for details)

if you have already started the VI before i'd recommend to reboot or at least log-off/log-on after this to make sure everything is re-read correctly

please also be aware about the difference between disks and volumes - a volume can also only be just a partition and finally reside on the same disk as another one ... use disk utility (OS X) or drive manager (XP) to get this information

the amount of recommended harddisk space is according to the GB listed on the product page (although installed size is less because of the compressed format)

your sustined notes question lets me think you selected a patch with too short notes - but an answer would need more details and should be answered by someone who knows it better.

Does it make ot better to convert the 3 extra drives in the mac pro to striped RAID 0 for storage of the symphonic cube?

i personally would prefer to not raid the drives ...
- i can decide which collections to spread across which drives
- if one drive fails i had to re-install everything ...

Very good point!! I had read that the smaple would stream quicker with the drives in raid 0 format? Is this true?

it is true that data throughput is higher from a raid 0 (with a good raid controller or fairly implemented soft-raid) than from a single disk.
it is in fact not higher (overall) if i spread the collections thoughtfully across the 3 drives.

btw: 2 750 GB sATA drives should do the job also and: avoid to record to and stream from the same drive simultaneously
