  • Speed Controller

    Hi,

I understand the principle of using a speed contorller to switch between different samples (staccato,Short detache, long detache etc.)

But I wonder how it works. In live performace the speed (duration) of a single note is determined when the note stops. So how can the speed controller select the right sample when the key is pressed and has not yet been released?

Do you recommend using the speedcontroller or do you prefer switching via key- or controller switch.

I'm certain this has been dealt with before, but didn't find anything in the forums so far. (If there is a useful post, please link it for me).

    Thanks for the help.

  • Hi sttel.

    >In live performace the speed (duration) of a single note is determined when the note stops.

    Correct.

    >So how can the speed controller select the right sample when the key is pressed and has not yet been released?

It can't select the right first sample, but as soon as you play a second note it analyses the playing speed and selects the right sample from that point on. (Check out the 'Control Edit' window when this is happening, it's quite instructive.)

    >Do you recommend using the speedcontroller or do you prefer switching via key- or controller switch.

Speed control is good for switching between slower attack and fast attack samples - for example, perf legatos and fast perf legatos. For other stuff I find CC commands the most useful. Keyswitches are OK too as long as you don't mind unwanted notes appearing in the score!

  • Thanks for the quick answer!

I think i'll try the controller-solution. I'm working with Cubase. Controllers are in a different section than the notes in the Pianoroll. So I don't have to scroll down in the Pianoroll to see the keyswitches.

  • In Cubase, you can mask the keyswitch notes so they don't show up in the score. I find that very helpful because I don't want to have too many controllers going.
