I am preparing to purchase the VSL Pro Edition when it is released. I too am very interested in the G5 capabilities but would like to know you opinion as to what is the best setup for running VSL with Logic. I already have a P4 1.7ghz with 1gb of rambus memory. I am currently running protools (digi001) on that box. I just need direction on what way to take this. Can you help?

    Thanks alot,

  • Isreal,

A common question on this forum - and one which has no direct answer. (have a read through the whole forum and see other comments, suggestions and points of view on this subject)

However, for now, the choices really fall down to 2 possibilities. Giga on the PC or Logic (EXS) on the Mac. I use both and will try and be impartial.

You have already indicated that you are a Logic user so we can assume that you are happy with that. Unfortunately Apple have killed this off on the PC platform so you will have to switch to a Mac to continue to benefit from future upgrades etc of that application.

The G5 looks good on paper and despite the hype from both camps will undoubtedly perform well. The EXS is a first rate sampler and shortly will be upgraded to work with VSL's performance tools. (Any day now we all hope) and I think we can be certain that Emagic will make Logic a 64 bit application in the next 12-24 months. So we can all look forward to quite a power boost.

The Giga on the other hand has a much more broader user (and Sample) base and at times of panic (those last minute jobs) can be faster to work with.

I have no reason to doubt that the VSL performance tools will be any less than those already developed for the Giga and its is possible, as they are integrated in the EXS code, that they will be better to work with.

You could purchase a G4 or G5 to keep Logic (Personally this is my favourite - Cubase/Nuendo and even Pro-Tools just don't match the fexibility and power I have found in Logic) - And you could use the ESX Samples and you would have a great set-up.

But you could something a little different: give yourself better flexibility and access to a broader range of samples by putting Giga card(s) in your existing P4.

[By Using the audio interface of your Digi 001. And you could lightpipe this up and bring in a huge number of channels to Logic.]

It wont be too long before we have a rock solid translation application that will freely interchange all sample formats.

The possibilities are endless and need not cost a bomb.

Regardless of which way you finally go - would recommend Maxing out the RAM and getting some fast disks to hold the samples. Firewire is fine and there really is no need to go down the SCSI route.
