  • Apassionata, Staging Altiverb, mix etc.....

    ALTIVERB SETUP:

Create 3 busses (aux's) for 3 Altiverb instances:

    1) Set wet/dry mix to 100% wet....and MUTE direct, on all 3 Altiverbs

    2) Altiverb A has 14m Disney with ER MUTED

    3) Altiverb B has 23m Disney with ER MUTED

    4) ALtiverb C has 14m disney with TAIL MUTED (so ER ONLY!)....(i use the Todd AO ER instead, much warmer....much more hollywood)

    5) Set all your sections AUXes (violins, violas, celli, etc, etc) to "Pre-Fader" .......now evoke send knobs on these stems that send to the 3 Altiverbs.......

    6) Mute the tail Altiverb busses for now..and just work on the send levels of the stems to the ER only Altiverb.

start by turning the send knob to the ER alti to 0 db..........since the stems are on pre-fader, pulling down the stem fader acts as your "direct level" . so on violas you want Direct level louder than the ER (since violas are close)....on the flutes it's flipped.....On them you want the ER louder than the direct........

Be very meticulous about this process since you really want to stage the orchestra correctly...........If you do this well...you will be surprised by how little tail is neccessary to get that BIG sound.

    One more thing.........

With libraries that have the strings samples and halls "baked-in" to the samples....sending to Early Reflections won't work properely....that is why Vienna is so versatile since their sections are very "dry"....which on first listen is off-putting and makes you think it's a bad library........but nothing could be further from the truth ....since you can really "place" Vienna with the above out-lined technique.

Here is another Demo of ALtiverb technique described above applied....

In this short segment you will hear in this order:

    Celli Pizz (closest)
    Violas (a little further)
    Flutes(even further)
    Clarinets (further still)

It's all about the "Early reflections balancing"

Matter of fact set up a loop like this in your DAW and while it is playing back, make your adjustments

Go here and click on: "Vienna_Staging_Test2.mp3" (it's at the bottom)

  • Rule of thumb:

This applies to the Todd AO Early Reflection (but more or less to the Disney 14m Early reflection as well)

When the Direct level plays circa 3 db louder than the ER, the distance is 4 meters (Your violas or celli)

When the Direct Level is the same volume as your Early Reflections, the distance is 10 meters. (Your winds)

When your Direct level is 6db lower in volume than the Early Reflections, the distance is 20 meters. (Your Brass)

One more example for what happens when you do all of the above,

    It's worth it!

    Click on "CapeFear_Test_swells.mp3"

(BTW those strings are the 2sec pfp's appassionata used RIGHT.....Basses play 1 note, Celli play 2 notes, violas play 1 note, violins play 2 notes....so it's all legal

    chord spelling:

    c, g, e, b, e (C ma7)

    That's it folks

  • Here is the EQ curve for my Apass Violins:
