  • Finder copy errors

When copying previously extracted VSL files from one firewire drive to another, I often get error messages: "The Finder cannot complete the operation because some data in ... could not be read or written. (Error code = -36)

Reinstalling the file from the DVD solve the problem for that file, but the next time I try a back up I get an error message with a different file. I have erased and re-initialised the first disk I noticed this on, but it also happens with different disks as well.

Had anyone else had this problem?

  • Hey Michael,

That's not good news. It probably means either the ata/sata controller on your machine has gone a bit funky, or the drive itself is going south. If you've got another drive handy, I'd try running it on the same channel. If you still have the problem, it's likely to be the controller (which may or may not be the logic board). If not, it's the probably the drive. I suppose it could be some funky system thing, but that's really not likely, IMO.

oh, duh... It could also be your DVD drive...

  • i'd say either a file system issue, broken cables (harddrive), bad memory, an overheated drive or insufficient power supply - is any of those a suspect?

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • Thanks very much, jbm and cm. I am having the hard drive looked at.
