  • Need advice re use of a breath controller

    Hi
I have a Yamaha S90 keyboard and a Yamaha BC3 controller. I would like to use the breath controller to control expression when I use VSL. A number of questions arise:
    1) Has anyone had success in using a breath controller with an S90? Mine won't respond.
    2) Can you map the breath controller to CC11 somehow? I am using Digital Performer 5 on a Mac.
    3) What are some other ways to use C11. I read about expression pedals. I'd love to know what others use to make use of the C11.
    4) Does mono key pressure have anything to do with data read by CC11?

Sorry for all the questions. Answer one if you can, or all if you are willing and able and I will be most appreciative.

and it works perfectly. Via MIDI Sysex commands you can assign any CC number to be sent by the breath controller (or rather by the MIDI Solutions box).

ad 4) As soon as you activate velocity crossfades and assign the breath controller CC to it, the key pressure doesn't influence the dynamics any more.

  • Hi Paul - to expand on 4) slightly: CC11 is the designated MIDI controller for expression while CC7 controls volume. Many VSL users use both in their arrangements, CC7 to set the mix volume of an instrument and CC11 to add dynamic contours to the phrases. Check out some of the excellent demos on this site to hear this in action!

Mono key pressure (aka channel aftertouch) is a separate MIDI controller, nothing to do with CC commands. The Vienna Instrument does not respond to aftertouch.

  • I use the same breath controller with the S90 ES. Not sure if that makes a difference but it works perfectly here. I use it to control VelocityXFade (on WW's and Brass) - can't imagine not having it!!!!!. Work on the two little knobs on the BC headset - they are a bit sensitive but when you find the right calibration it will work great.

    Hope this helps.
