  • Interface Issues?

Hello, I am a new owner of vienna instruments appassionata strings. I am having a problem with popping sounds when I play. This occurs in stand alone and as a plug-in. This only occurs when I route the audio through my firepod. If I use core audio I have no pops. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is goin on?

  • Anyone????? Please Help

  • I don't own a firepod, but have seen posts other places where people have this problem and it is an acknowledged issue with the firepod. Here is one thread as an example using Native Instrumetns Guitar Rig.

  • Thank You for the info. After messing around today I believe you are correct. I think there is a problem with the Firepod. Maybe an issue with a new update in core audio or something.

Anyone with any more information would be great. Is anyone using a Firepod with Vienaa Instruments?

  • This could be a buffer issue with the FirePod. Usually poops and things like that occur .. for me anyways .. when there's insufficient RAM or buffer space to allow the samples to play together in time.

I used to get this alot in Logic .. what I did was to increase the RAM buffer size for EXS. I'm not sure how you'd go about doing this on your Firepod. Perhaps looking in your Firepod settings to see if you can increase the audio buffer size.

    Hope that helps.

  • Have you tried playing with the GUI closed?

  • First of all , thank you very much for the replies. As far as the control settings for the Firepod, I am using a Mac so as far as I can see there is no control panel or settings that I can change. On a PC this is not the case. I spoke with a couple of friends today who say that popping is usually a sync issue. However, my little blue sync light is glowing just fine. On top of that all my other plugs are playing perfectly so that would lead me to believe that it is not a sync issue. To make it even more strange, whenever I switch to internal audio and do not use the Firepod, everything works fine. This implies that the RAM is enough. I will close the GUI and see if that makes any difference. Thank you again for the help everyone.

  • Hetoreyn,

I'm a newcomer to VSL and Logic Pro 7.1. Have a MacBookPro with 2 gig RAM and a Digidesign 002 rackmount interface. Also having no success keeping my setup running. After only a few MIDI tracks recorded, I'm getting I/O overloads. Then there's no playback. At first I could shut everything off and get it going again. Not now. Freezing tracks, increasing buffer sizes, etc. makes no difference. Playback feels like ancient history. I'm wondering if the problem might be with the 002 interface. But who knows. How's your Logic/VSL experience going? Good thing my hair's already gray...

  • My issues with pops and cracks are still unresolved. I have contacted support for both Vienna Instruments and Presonus. Vienna Instruments support believes the issue is the interface. Presonus simply asked if I was using an ilock. Does anyone here have any other ideas or suggestions. It has been almost a week and I can not get Vienna Instruments to work properly.

  • Tim,

How's your snap, crackle and pop going? What is the ilock that Presonus referred to? This week I've been able to play back some VSL tracks, if I set the buffer as high as it will go, but the main tracks clip and notes drop out. Tough to playback with this situation, like watching TV when the picture is eighty percent snow.
Next week I'm taking my MacBookPro to a guy in NYC who thinks he can fix the situation with some treaking. Would be great. I'll keep you posted if I have any success. In the meantime, I'll keep humming this song. "Lemon tree, very pretty, and the lemon flower is sweet, but the fruit of the poor lemon is impossible to eat..."
    Best, Tom

  • hi mate, i am also a new vsl user with a firepod, who has also just bought app strings but difference is mine works absoulty fine. I do get pops with the firepod sometimes but then i have to change the buffer setting. I use a PC which has a slightly different firepod control panel, but for a mac if you open up the firepod control icon and then click firepod control in the top left corner - then preferences and you should be able to alter the buffer size.

    Hope this helps you.

  • Thank you for both replies. I am still having lots of pops and cracks. The tech support at Presonus said that some MOTU instruments with ilocks did the same thing. They said it was resolved by updating a driver for the ilock. I wonder if there is anything like this for the vienna key? As far as changing settings for the Firepod buffer....I can't. On a Mac there is no control panel or settings that I can alter. All of this stuff is done in Core Audio. I can adjust latency and buffers in my host but making these changes does nothing to help with the pops and cracks. Also my problems occur in standalone mode. Keep me posted if you all hear anything that I could try.

  • tim, if you have the latest version of LCC (syncrosoft license control center) and VI software you have the latest *driver* ...

IMPORTANT: reboot everytime before and after updating something related to LCC, VI or licenses (would be a good idea for all other applications too of course) - updating something related to running processes can damage your system and/or configuration

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • I did not know that CM. Any advice???? Should I reinstall syncrosoft and reboot? I am almost desperate after one full week of this not working.
    Tim

  • first things first ... the problem looks related to audio (mentioning core audio, rather meant was internal audio, works fine) and it sounds unusual to me one cannot set buffer size (maybe referred to as latency) on such a device.

have there been drivers needed to be installed fore the firepod and are those the latest?
do you have other devices on the same firewire chain (harddisks, video, ect) catching needed bandwidth?
sorry if overlooked, but did you mention already your hosting application (logic, cubase, ect)?

  • Thank you again for the reply. My host is Live 5.2 but remember I can not even get Vienna Instruments to work correctly in stand alone mode. Also, I am almost certain that there is no control panel settings between my computer and the Firepod. That is to say that I can not adjust any latency or buffer settings between the computer and the Firepod. The interface is the only thing pluged into number 1 firewire port. I have the latest version of OSX 10.4.9. This should contatin the latest Core Audio "drivers". Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

    Tim

  • Sorry, I missed one of your questions. I have checked for any "drivers" or firmware for the interface but can find none for Mac. And again, this is a class compliant piece of hardware. I never had to install any "drivers" or such. To my knowledge all of that stuff is contained in Core Audio from Mac. And I do have the latest update for OSX 10.4.9 so that should be in there. Thank you again for the help, I'm not sure if Presonus is ignoring me.

    Tim

  • Is OSX 10.4.9 the real culprit here????????
