  • Cubase and VSL

Anyone know how to use VST Vienna Special Edition and setp up channels. I'm having a rough time trying to keep one instrument playing on channels. I don't know how to set up channels on the stand-alone program, but if anyone of you know please tell me.

  • Have a look at my answer in the Orchetration forum regarding using Sibelius with VSL-VI hosted by Cubase: http://community.vsl.co.at/viewtopic.php?t=10851&iframe=true

The principles for using it with any other application by setting up the channels and filters are the same.

  • Thanks for that but that is not what I want and I need to explain it better. I tried your way and it doesn't work for me either. -Just a note. I am loading my saved midi's to Cubase and trying to set up each instrument in cubase to run Vienna Special Edition instruments in different channels. For example, Violin 1 would be channel 1, Viola channel 2, etx. But VSL standalone player doesn't let me set up channels accept has me set up the controler to change keys for different affects in articulation. I don't want to do that. I want to be able to hear different instruments played from VSL standalone player in cubase. Instead it will only allow me to play one instrument at a time if I click it which is driving me nuts. There is no tutorial or nothing over this, and I don't know how others have created music on it but it sure in the hell isn't working right for me or allowing me to set up different parts on vsl like other virtual softs do... If anyone can tell me how to do this I would appreciate it thanKs. [:(]

  • Hello Jgcomposer,

the Vienna Instruments are not multitimbral, which means that you simply load one instance for every instrument or section.

  • Hi, I think you might be getting a little muddled. You dont use Vienna instruments as a stand alone player because it wont go through Cubase like that.

In Cubase you need to assign a VST instrument to Vienna. (F11 will bring this up)

Then you change the Midi track to Vienna instuments. (on the left hand side)

As Paul said you have to do this everytime you want to add a new VI track because the program is not multitibral. .. Its a shame its not, that would make things alot easier for me.

So for instance, if you are using 5 different instruments. You should have 5 cases of Vienna instruments in the F11 VST's box and there should be 5 cases of the player open aswell.

  • The other option if you have cubase 4 is to create an instrument track and insert the vi player through the inspector. Each track will require the player to be inserted and the preset or matrix or patch loaded.

  • Thanks to those responding to this question as I was just about to post a new item regarding this.

I am new to the VSL architecture (one week old) and was poking around last night trying to get Cubase and VSL to talk to each other when Cubase has multiple tracks.

I think that it would be helpful to new VSL users like myself for there to be a 'quick guide' type of doc. outlining the steps to use VSL in Cubase, Sonar etc. Most soft syths that I own (EW, Sample Tank,Choirs etc) provide a short guide on getting their product to interact with the more common sequencers. (I have been unable to find anything of this nature for VSL.)

That notwithstanding, your explanation above seems to have answered my question but just so I am clear.....

If I have a composition made up of piano and oboe and would like to play that through Cubase and VSL, I would.

    1. Once in Cubase, assign the piano to track 1, midi 1.
    2. Assign the oboe to track 2, midi 2.
    3. Via F11, open two instances of VSL.
    4. In instance 1, choose a piano sample
    5. In instance 2, choose an oboe sample
    6. Assign Cubase track 1 output to VSL instance 1
    7. Assign Cubase track 2 output to VSL instance 2

A question: Does mulitple instances of VSL use (considerably) more memory than a single instance of a mulitimbral synth with multiple tracks?

    Thanks.

  • Yeh that sounds right to me. It does use alot of CPU opening up more and more. Its a shame that there isnt a way to have only one player open. It would save a lot more cpu.

  • It was a surprise to discover that the VI is not multitimbral and having multiple instances of the VI does consume a lot of CPU. However, where the VI scores is when you start getting into different articulations: if your oboe part needs long notes, staccatos, trills and grace notes you can have them all loaded into one instance (in what VSL call a 'Matrix') and switch between them by a method of your choice (keyswitching, mod wheel, CC or playing speed).

On a multimbral sampler like GigaStudo those four articulations would have to be loaded into four separate MIDI channels. One single VI matrix holds 144 patches, which is very helpful if you're making complex orchestral music with lots of different performance styles.

  • Thanks a bunch guys for answering me. I thought I was doing something wrong in the way I setup VSL on the pc but now seing its not multi-timbral I can run many instantes in cubase without running just one. Maybe this is a better way for playing midi through VSL, I don't know whats better but I figured it out thanks guys, [:)]
