  • VI disappeared?

Hi - I'm using Mac OS 10.4.9, and in both the latest versions of Logic Pro and Cubase SX (4.0.2) VI has disappeared as a plug in. I don't know when exactly this happened but also, the standalone version does not load - it starts loading but never quite loads. I've tried reinstalling the latest version of VI - the 1.11 version. My machine is a PPC Mac G5 2.0ghz dual processor machine. I've never had a problem with VI before - anyone know what could cause this - seems weird. By the way this version 1.11 was working before. I just haven't used it in several weeks and I've come back - and I don't remember what software updates I installed during that time - and it's not working now.

  • miklos, this might be related to the 10.4.9 update (which came along during this period IIRC) ... some questions:
    - does the LCC still show the licenses on your key
    - are there any expired demo licenses
    - have you tried to simply re-install VI software

and remember: only a CRAY can run an endless loop in just three seconds.
  • One more thing - - which I seem to be recommending to everyone: try rebuilding the startup disk directory with Alsoft's DiskWarrior (starting from the DiskWarrior CD). If you don't have DiskWarrior, I suggest acquiring it ASAP - - as it is THE essential disk utility for Macs. For me, it has fixed problems that no other software even detected - - although they were, in actual practice, obvious anomalies.

I found DiskWarrior especially useful after installing the 10.4.9 update. After updating from Altiverb 5 to Altiverb 6, Logic refused to "see" Altiverb 6 and insisted that Altiverb 5 was "missing." After installing Izotope Ozone, it asked for its licensing code every time I opened it - although I had entered the code and registered the software. After installing OS 10.4.9, the first opening of one instance of an empty Vienna Instruments instance took over 6 minutes.

Rebuilding the directory with DiskWarrior fixed every one of these problems. Sometimes it reported a couple of minor errors, but, on some occasions, it just stated that "all errors, if any, have been fixed." Whether or not it reported a specific error, the anomalies simply ceased to exist: Logic immediately recognized Altiverb 6, Ozone opened without requiring me to re-enter the authorization code, and a single instance of an empty VI plugin loaded in 1 minute and 10 seconds.

One other thing, installing the OS 10.4.9 update can corrupt some software. In my case, it corrupted MS/Office so that the Equation Editor was no longer accessible. The cure was uninstalling and then re-installing MS/Office Not only did Equation Editor work again, but all elements of the application now function at about twice their previous speed.

Yes I have tried installing the latest version of VI several times, restarted, and also tried reinstalling Cubase, but I suspected the problem wasn't host related when Logic also failed to find VI - it was more helpful - it says that it cannot find vienna ins plug in. [edit: just checked on this and it actually says "Core Audio: Plug-In "Vienna Ins" not available!"]

There is one expired demo license on another key - my cubase key but not on the VI key - on the VI key I keep only VI licenses. All the VI licenses appear to be fine.

I agree Disk Warrior rocks I was just recommending that to someone else myself. Yes I have run it only yesterday to try to fix some problems including this one but no change on this issue - although the rest of the machine is much happier!

  • I just went into Logic au manager and found VSL was deselected - I selected it, restarted, now it is coming up with a message that cubase was presenting before (but has since stopped) that says "Custom Data Folder is inaccessible Please use Directory Manager to specify a new Custom Data folder" it looks like a windows type dialogue box.

  • The update to 10.4.9 caused a total re-scan/validation of all au units to happen. My first Logic boot after upgrading to 10.4.9 took ages but thankfully it launched OK and is running OK with Vienna Instruments. However there have been loads of reports of trouble with third party plug-ins with 10.4.9.

  • Ok after a bit of playing around, I put all the VI instrument directories back into the directory manager - no easy task! - and it seems to be working well in logic now - no dialogue about the custom directory, so VI seems to be working fine in Logic but in Cubase it still does not appear in the instrument list as it did before. Any ideas? I've already reinstalled Cubase and VI a number of times.

    Best,
    Miklos.

  • Miklos:

Have you tried rebuilding the startup drive's directory with DiskWarrior?

  • Yep. Of course, I ran all the tests, and only yesterday too.

  • Ok - it appears all is not well in fact - I just checked the actual licenses inside logic - it's only showing keyboards and percussion - but in the standalone version, it shows all licenses. It DOES show the registered licenses in Logic, but not the actual files in the right column - but in the standalone version I can see the licenses AND the files. Weird!
