  • Special Edition rocks!

It was with some trepidation that I ventured from my safe little world of Opus and Horizon series libs, but I have to say:

1.Installation and registration - no problems.

    2.Synchrosoft download - no problems.

    3.User interface - logical & intuitive.

4.Works perfectly with Cubase SL 2

Everything works as it should, first time - very rare in my experience!

Add some expansion packs with more articulations and you have a world winner [[;)]]

Thanks for making my job a whole lot easier!

    Mike.

  • Well Mike,

I'm getting mine tomorrow in the mail hopefully, and even though I am an Opus user, I am still looking forward to getting mine. I'll still use my Opus Bundle, but I mainly wanted the VSE to be a partner to work in with my Appassionata strings, and my VI Orchestral Strings 1/2. I can't wait!!!!!
I feel like a kid waiting for a new toy!!!

    best to you Mike!

  • Hey Steve

The biggest thing for me is not having to use the performance tool - ever again!

All those legato patches always available - with portamento only a keyswitch away - this is a dream come true. I miss the Trills, but that's all I use Opus for now.

I've dedicated my 3rd slave (P4, 2gig RAM) to Special Edition, via Midi-Over-Lan, and I'm finding I can do a staggering amount of instruments, even with only 2 gig of RAM, as long as I use the RAM-Optimize function as I go along.

My next purchase will be Appassionata Strings. What is your opinion of them? Have they become your main "go to" Strings?

    Regards,
    Mike.

    Enjoy [:)]

  • Mike McCarthy,

I totally agree with you. I just recieved them a few days ago, and the are my first VSL purchase. And they SOUND SO GOOD! Had some problems, but I am pretty sure that that is my fault for having a USB external hard drive (will be returning it for a firewire 800). All in all, VSE is incredible!

Thanks so much for making it available for the tighter budgeted of us.

  • Hi Mike,

sounds great! If you want to hear some appassionata demo's showing the articulations, Beat Kaufmann has a very clever "movie" type file you can download. Basically, he has a piece of music which goes through all of the different appassionata articulations, and as you hear them, you also watch a visual which brings up the name of the articulations as you listen. I think it's a brilliant and clever demo. It really gives you a good example of what you can do with them. I watch it through my "Real Player".

The link to the page is here: http://vsl.co.at/en-us/211/412/272.vsl
There are also some beaut top demo's by other composers also on the same page that sound 10 out of 10 to me.
Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis Ralf Vaughn Williams [Jay Bacal]
Sunset, Dream and Nightmare! Guy Bacos
    Appassionata Articulations Beat Kaufmann
    Eurasien Appassionata Simon Ravn
    Reminiscing Theme Maarten Spruijt
    Anaheim Appassionatas Christian Kardeis
    They're all brilliant demo's.

As for the appassionata strings, I love them. They sound wonderful through the Altiverb demo that I downloaded. Next week I should have my altiverb. [counting down the days for that also!].

So glad you like the SE! As I said, I'm hanging out for mine to arrive tomorrow, and bang - on my computer they'll be going ASAP! I already have some of the VI products - the orchestral strings - the standard version, and once I've got Altiverb, I'm planning to purchase the extended versions.
But for me, SE will give me some of the basic goodies of the whole VI library, that I could not afford at the moment.
I'm also really hanging out to try out some layering of the Appass. strings with the solo and Chamber strings in the SE. If you have a listen to Jay's Vaughn Williams rendition of the Tallis Fantasia, the realism he achieves through layering, to me, is amazing, and is something I really want to start experimenting with.
I'll be able to try some of these things out once I get the SE, and do some layering using the chamber and solo strings with the appassionatas.

Interesting you are in NZ. I was born and bred in Palmerston North, and I've been to Auckland a few times. I'm now living in Queensland Australia, and even though I love it over here in Australia and I still love good old NZ
    also though!

    best,

    Steve.

  • Steve

Thanks for the link to Beat's tutorial - much appreciated.

Looks like Appassionata Strings are a "must have".

    Regards,
    Mike.

PS. South African born, living in NZ since 1997. Love it here!

  • Hi Mike,

Well, I'm glad you're loving NZ. Some beaut scenery there!

I must apologise, because not long after posting my last message, I suddenly realized that you may have already heard all the appassionata demo's, and I felt like a real dill once I thought of that! But they just are great demo's, and I find them inspiring to listen to.

I'm so glad you think the SE is great. It's also good to hear from another fellow New Zealander!

    best regards,

    Steve [:D]
