  • Copland - Fanfare for the Common Man - Special Edition

Jay Bacal sent us a perfect complement to his previous Special Editon demo (Faure's Pavane):

Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man,

    thanks a lot Jay!

  • Most excellent - great job Jay.

  • Wonderful in every way Jay. The interpretation is on a par with any version I've ever heard (or played in).
It's a superb demonstration of the capabilities of the VSE - in the right hands, and a great example and incentive for many of us.

I was still at school (many years ago [[:|]] ) when a brass/percussion ensemble from the forerunner of the RNCM in Manchester played this for us and it made the hairs on my head stand on end. Nowadays there are many less hairs there but the sensation was the same on hearing your rendition!! Bravo!

I haven't looked at the tutorial files yet but I'm sure they'll be every bit as informative and educational as those you posted with the fabulous Pavane recently. Please keep them coming.

Would be interested to know what your setup is - sequencer, PC type reverb etc. & how long (roughly) does a project such as this take you to complete from start to finish - and what's your method of working

Many thanks again for this superbly enjoyable rendition,

    Best regards,

    John

  • Beautiful demo Jay! Wow!

I am also curious to know what sequencer you are using at the moment - if you don't mind me asking this.
It is so very helpful and thoughtful of you to give the tutorial also.
Well, thank you again for another great demo and also thank you for the tutorial attached to this.
    best regards,

    Steve [:D]

  • Thanks Dave (King of all things tuba), John and Steve.

    I currently use Cakewalk's Sonar 6 Producer Edition and Steinberg's Cubase 4.

I really like the time warp feature in Cubase. It makes creating tempo maps almost a pleasure.

I use Sonar for everything else. Why? I've used it the longest and just feel more comfortable with it.

The reverb is Altiverb 6 Amsterdam Concertgebouw IR.

    Briefly my method is this:

    1) input all the midi notes with a midi keyboard
    2) create a rough tempo map
    3) choose desired articulations using keyswitches
    4) draw controller data to shape phrases one instrument at a time -- this includes midi expression controller #11, velocity crossfade with modwheel assigned to controller #1, low pass filter assigned to controller #12, and pitch bend with pitchwheel
    5) fine tune tempo map
    6) record all parts to audio
    7) use Waves S1 to narrow stereo field of individual instruments and pan them into position
8] use Altiverb 6 to create an enjoyable space
    9) adjust volume envelopes on tracks in Sonar to fine-tune the balance between instruments.
    10) output mix, burn to CD, listen on the big speakers downstairs on old stereo and on the crappy little speakers in my car.
    11) rinse and repeat as necessary [:D]

    Best,
    Jay

  • Hello Jay,

thanks for all of the information. That's going to be real helpful for me.

Your work shows admirable attention to fine detail, and this is always inspiring to see someone like yourself achieving such great sounding demo's, and also giving others the method of working.

    best regads,

    Steve [:D]

  • Hi Jay,

Thank you so much for generously sharing your method of working in such detail. I don't know how anyone else feels, but often I feel as though I'm 'whistling in the dark' a bit as far as technique is concerned.

Having regard to the wonderful stuff you produce, and now knowing the workflow you follow will help me to develop a more efficient method of working and stop me wondering too much if I could be doing better!

    Thanks again,

    John

  • Excellent Jay, one of the best ever by anyone. A very natural quality there.

    My question's are:

1.How do you have your pallette of articulations set up (the organization of your matrix files?)

    2. How much do you customize this for each different mockup?)

    3. Do you use multiple midi tracks per part or one (i.e as few as possible?)

    Thanks

    Dave
