    Hi,

    I bought Appassionata Strings when they first came out, but I've had nothing but problems. Notes stutter, until cached. Things don't load. Notes cut off. It's unusable.

    I'm hosting the VI in the latest version of Bidule. My machine has 2 GB and works flawlessly with GS3 and GVI.

    Earlier I tried a new setup. The machine played the violins patches just fine. I go to load the violas and get no sound. Same with the cellos and basses. I reboot. Now they load. But notes cut off after about a second here and there.

    Please help me fix this. As things stand, its unusable.

    What kind of audio card do you use ? Do you use the standalone software or the VSTi plugin ? Asio or WDM ?

    If you use the VSTi, what is your host ?

    Bidule is the host. M-Audio 192 audio card. ASIO. Sonar 3 is the sequencer.

    The PC is running Windows XP Pro. AMD Athlon64 3000+. 2 GB RAM (OCZ 2-3-2-5).

    Have you deleted all Gigastudio tweaks you may have installed?

    Yes, the Gigastudio memory tweaks will interfere with the proper functioning of the VI. You must restore them to the original Windows settings.

    This only confirms for me that custom players are a very bad trend.

    Giga is my primary sampler.

    Is there any plan to update the VI to address this compatibility issue?

    The problem is that Gigastudio is not working effective with the standard settings of XP. So Tascam should offer an update which works without detuning the OS system settings.

    I'll take that as a "no, we don't plan an update."

    Maybe Tascam "should" do this, but certainly the tweak is well known, as I believe it was first published on this forum, well before the VI was released.

    What I really wish was that Tascam had been more responsive to developers and provided security options and such. There should have been no need for a custom player.

    Oh well. This isn't the first or last time that I've felt buyer's regret...

    Jon, I have Bidule on a PC with GS3 as well. All I do is set the memory configuration in GS3 to the XP default and everything is fine. The regular XP audio tweaks are not a problem and can (probably should) remain.

    Also I have been running GVI and VI within Bidule on another PC with no problems as well.

    What doesn't work is GS3 operating with any of it's memory presets on and running almost anything else along side.

    I can freely go back and forth from using GS3 and VI on the same computer in a matter of a minute or so but not at the same time. GVI and VI in Plogue is very compatible for using Giga sounds and VSL VI's at the same time.

    Edit: to clarify: set GS3 configuration to XP default than run Plogue with GVI and VI (but don't run GS3)

    ... and you are right, *the tweak* was first posted here on this forum - obviously because VSL has been the first library needing such an amount of samples loaded.

    but without an offense to someone: you can't ask for an update which behaves well with an unsupported configuration (which would on the other side mean it works not as well with a default configuration) and basically the tweaks result in an unsupported configuration.
    which registry setting should be taken as the *regular* one - i personally know several dozens working well on one or another machine, a few of them work on many machines, some of them don't work at all in another configuration ... too many unclear undocumented options.

    if you take a look at the tutorials at www.learngigastudio.com they say explicitely *check out the factory presets - which one works on your machine is a question of try and error* ... i wouldn't call that a supportable situation, so VSL made every effort to allow ViennaInstruments running well on a default XP ... pretty successful i'd think!

    Jon, the issue of removing the GS memory tweaks is well known. In fact I reported it over a year ago. The problem really lies with the memory requirements of GS. I would imagine if you loaded your patches in GVI there wouldn't be any such problem. Is it possible for you to create your "instruments" in GS and then just use GVI as a player?

    FWIW I think that I read somewhere that Tascam was abandoning this kernel stuff for GS4. They really need to, as GS is well behind the curve in many respects. I used it before VI was released and it served me very well, but as I can load more in 1 VI machine than in 5 GS machines, I would never go back.
