  • Logic crash then vastly extended VI loading times

Yesterday Logic crashed while I was working - - at the time I was loading an instrument into EXS24. Several VI instruments were running as well. Subsequent to the crash I checked all disks with Disk Utility which found nothing to repair. I repaired permissions on the startup disk which showed the same list of repaired permissions it shows every time I run it.

I then opened Logic and attempted to instantiate one instance of Vienna Instruments. It took over six minutes to load (during which time Activity Monitor stated that Logic was "not responding.") Logic did however open and work properly. Loading times were previously no more than 3 minutes for the first instantiation of VI.

In an attempt to remedy this I rebuilt the directories on all disks with Alsoft's DiskWarrior. This made no difference. I am running OS 10.4.9, Logic 7.2.3 and the latest versions of License Control Manager and the Vienna Instruments software. Any suggestions? I would be most appreciative of help.

  • Starting from a recent clone of my startup drive - - made just before I updated from 10.4.8 to 10.4.9, opening the first instance of Vienna Instruments in Logic 7.2.3 takes 2 minutes and 11 seconds - - about 1/3 the time it now takes to do the same thing on my usual startup disk. The one other difference between the two is that, on the clone, I am running Altiverb 6.0.5 while on the main startup disk I am running Altiverb 6.0.6 which supposedly fixes the bug that causes Logic to freeze immediately after a bounce. However, prior to yesterday's crash the startup time for both disks was approximately the same. In other words there was no observable difference whether running OS 10.4.8 or 10.4.9 or Altiverb 6.0.5 or 6.0.6.

Again, I would very much appreciate help with this.

  • The good news is that, for reasons that remain shrouded in mystery, the problem I described has disappeared. All that I did was to run Apple's Disk Utility one more time. It reported again that it found no problems to fix, I restarted from the normal startup disk (not the clone) and the initial loading of a single VI instane was normal again - - slightly over 2 minutes. I have been able to work for several hours since without any software anomalies.

  • Hi Steve,

very bizarre...I am glad that the problem is solved. Please let me know when you encounter any trouble again.

    Best regards,

Thanks for your response. To add more mystery, this morning I started from my usual startup disk (the one that manifested problems yesterday) opened Logic's autoload file and instantiated a single VI instance - - this took 1 minute and 20 seconds - almost one minute faster than doing the same thing yesterday.

On an unrelated topic, I was wondering if you could comment on the thread

entitled "Logic offline Bounce problem." Like the other contributors to that thread I have found freezing and offline bouncing of Vienna Instrument tracks in Logic highly unreliable - - with wrong patches playing and notes cut off. I generally have had fairly complex matrices installed when attempting this - and used keyswitching as one of the controllers. Others, however, have reported the same problem with matrices containing as few as two cells. I'm wondering if things would be improved if one used only different kinds of CC data to control the matrix. Also wondering if this problem is peculiar to Logic or if it occurs with other applications such as DP, Cubase, etc.

In ay case, for the time being I successfully bounce tracks in real time - - but this is, obviously, a time consuming procedure.

Thanks again for your response. I look forward to any comments or insights yu might have regarding freezing and off-line bouncing.

    Hi again,

the problem you mention here is presently being investigated. Unfortunately we still don´t know what causes the errors during bouncing and freezing in Logic and whether it is initiated by Logic or Vienna Instruments. Moreover the problem seems to occur more frequently on older Mac models (PPC). As soon as I have received some further information about this issue, I´ll let you know.

I am sorry that I cannot give you a more favourable reply at the moment.

    Best regards,
