    hi,

    i'm about to buy
    orchestral strings 1 (std+ext)
    orchestral strings 2 (std+ext)
    woodwinds 1 (std)
    brass 1 (std)
    and maybe the chamber strings(std) or appasionata(std+ext) (because of the offer)

    but this is a lot of money [[:P]] and i don't know if my PC can handle all this. For now i have an AMD 3gz 2Gig ram dedicated to samples. When i read the system requirements, it looks like i should use 1PC for each sections [[:P]]
    The more often i will use strings 1 + 2 do you think i need to buy one more PC ? what is the system you have and for wich VI ?

    question 2 : is it possible to buy extended lib only after a while ? because i don't see this option on the product page. "BUY NOW" is only for std or full (maybe i have to register products first + log in ?)

    how many computers you need for your setup depends at first on your workflow - the more you want to have loaded the more memory you will need, so there is no generic rule ...
    ad 2) after purchsing a standard library you can use the extended (which has to be understood as an extension to standard, not a seperate library) in a demo mode. you can later purchase the extended part actually online, but - as you're assuming correctly - only if you have the respective standard library already registered.

    I have all of the above (std+ext) except chamber strings (just purchased Woodwinds II std and well get ext.)

    I run Orch Strings I+II and Appassionata on a single PC using 3gb switch loading almost 2.7 gigs into ram. I get some crackling with so much ram loaded but when I print I will lower the ram load and get clean parts.

    Winds I are loaded on another PC (alone) also hitting over 2.6 gigs loaded with 3 gb switch.

    Winds II are on an older PC with one gig loaded out of 1.5 available. This is not satisfactory (too few articulations available) so I'm building a new PC and will load 2.6 into that with 3 gb switch.

    Brass I is on my DAW a Mac Dual 2.7 also loading over 2 gigs into ram.

    That's 4 computers and it's barely enough for me (if you think about a large percussion pallette or a vst host for synths and such or even a huge choral library being needed.)

    As cm said it is a workflow issue because there are other ways of doing things. I like everything triggering in real time to constantly polish and edit. You could have only basic instruments loaded to put all the parts in and then later load up all the articulations of a family (like winds.) You would put the appropriate articulations in the tracks that once had only short and long articulations as a sort of sketch.) Then repeat the process with strings, winds, and brass etc.

    You will figure how you want to work and what you need. You can't go wrong with the collections you mentiond above
    and will be able to make music right away on a single PC. If you consider the VSL library is hundreds of gigabytes you will probably want to find a solution to having as much available to you when your creating music as possible.

    Or you could buy the SE - - if you determine that it will be enough for your needs - - or you could wait a bit to see how long it will be before everything is 64 bit - - and can, therefore (at least theoretically) address a relatively unlimited amount of RAM. the next version Mac OS (10.5) is reported to be fully 64 bit and rumor has it that the new version of Logic will be also (it would make sense for Apple to issue 64 bit versions of their Pro software (i.e. Final Cut Pro, Logic Pro, Aperture, etc. along with Leopard and new 8 processor core machines - - let's see what happens at he NAB show in April and WWDC in Jube.) 64 bit is also happening in the Windows world. I'd guess that the folks at VSL are working on a 64 bit version of their software as well.

    Get Appassionata strings too! Together you have a great sound. Also it would be better to learn them both at the same time. In fact if you were just doing big lush string sections you could use Apassionata only and then even Woodwinds and Brass on same computer (as long as you don't load a ton of articulations.)

    Since learning the interface (very easy) and learning the library (lots of great stuff) is important, I would get the Strings I mentoned above and at least Woodwinds I and Brass I because you will be able to do quality orchestral arrangements and get a head start on all the possibilities with the library.

    Don't forget there is a ram optimizer so once you have created a part the interface will learn what samples you didn't use and throw them out. So you could have a 450 meg preset loaded and suddenly it goes down to 50 megs!

    I do film work where I have to have everything at my fingertips so if you don't need to do something like that you will be able to do HUGE orchestral arrangements on a single PC. Just a matter of approach.
