  • OPUS 1 PERF TOOL EXPLANATION PLZ!

I'm getting crazy.... legato mode works, but I can't seem to understand how it works properly... It does not matter whether I change legato theshold or the release time, the effect is the same, I try to play naturally, but for each 3 o 4 consecutive notes, one is portamento, the rest just sustain almost forever and it is impossible to play at least in real time... I am using maple midi tools as it was explained by Damon Bradley cos it did not work otherwise... maybe I am not understanding the philosophy of this tool, and maybe I should record with bypass on and then when bouncing to audio put it off when I'd want two notes to play portamento (I tried too but it's not working either), and from users' comments I know that there is a way to play naturally and believe you are in heaven (or at least near the concertino)... so...

... can anyone explain how the perf tool should work, works and if it's my playing technique wrong or not, or my midi, or... whatever to make this nice tool work?

    thks a lot

  • Here's my question: My V. 1 perf tool works fine but when I set up the V. 2 exactly as V. 1 I have problems galore. Isn't the MIDI set up the same with both versions? I don't have any kind of "yoke" going on - is that something that V. 2 requires and not V. 1?

  • Not sure if this applies to you , but at least on the Mac, I had this problem, and it was solved by eliminating multiple MIDI channel information from coming out of my controller. But I think this was very MAC pertinent.

    Evan Evans

  • HI Evan,

Well, I'm running a MAC so I'll check that but I don't know what other info my controller would be sending out and why that wouldn't have shown up on V. 1. We shall see.

    Dave Connor

  • well, from what I am reading, maybe we OPUS 1 users should have V.1 too and see if it works better than Beta 2... does it works fine for you, Christian?

    Thks

  • v2beta1 is for gigastudio on windows - tycheth, please some details about your setup (especially midi routing)

  • I am using Giga + Cubase this way:

1st I use Marple Midi tools. Then

I open Gigastudio and assign none ports to midi.

I open Perf Tool and assign marple1 for In and Nemesys 1 for out

I open cubase separately and choose for ex in channel 1 midi port out marple.

If I choose in cubase Nemesys as port out, the legato patch will just work without legato in it (but without sustain notes playing all either).
If I choose Marple port, the legato works, but then I don't know if it is a midi problem or smthg but sustain notes layer one on another and form a cluster after playing some notes until they fade out naturally. I tried changing the threshold and release with the same results.
I tried from the very beggining to use the setup from the manual )without midi marple) (keyboard>perf>etc...) but it didn't work. I am using original soft.

    Thks

  • tycheth, i would assume you have set cubase' midi in to *all* and therefor receives all midi signals available - the performance tool does not like to receive multiple streams of midi signals. try to set the midi in in cubase to a specific channel for a single port (usually where your keyboard is sending midi)
the direct route keyboard - perf tool - nemesysport will also work if no midi loop occures

  • Thks a lot CM, it seems to be working more or less now... "the sustained notes layers"still happen but in a lesser %, maybe it is now a matter of practicing with it... for ex the clarinet works perfect, I can play fast and still be true legato, but w/ the strings I have to be more careful, but the main problem is solved now.

    Thks [;)]

  • I think it may just be that the strings sound less obviously legato? Atleast to my ears the strings sound closer to regular sustains than theother instruments, where you really hear the passage from one note to another... or maybe my settings are wrong aswell? Can someone please confirm that its less obvious with strings than brass or woodwinds?

  • In fact I was refering to the portamento patch, which sound is pretty obvious when it happens. I might be playing sometimes a bit too fast and the portamento samples mix w/ the short note and produce this cluster type of sound, but again, it may be me, or a bug or something else ... [;)]

BTW, what are we guys gonna do when our performance tool will be expired? we should get the full 2.0 version before that happens should'nt we?

    Regards

  • Tycheth's comment about PT's expiry caught my eye. Could someone explain that? It doesn't have an inbuilt expiry date does it? [:(] Have I misunderstood?

    Heath

  • heath, the intention to apply an expiry date is only to make sure no user works with the beta longer than neccessary

  • Thanks. I didn't know the PT was a Beta tool. Does that mean users will get a free upgrade to the full version?

I ask because I had a general computer utility called JV16 Powertools (a freebie) which expired, somewhat cunningly, on Jan 1. To my shock, a window popped up asking me to pay for a new version. I didn't see that in the small print. Cheeky! [:D]

  • just to confirm - the performance tool will remain free of charge for registered users
