First of all I would like to thank the VSL team for their wonderful samples, for their dedicated efforts, and for the high standard (sadly rare these days) of their customer service.
When I review the contents of the pro edition, I am somewhat puzzled. Why, for example, are solo viola and bass not included, but cimbasso and contrabass trombone included? I know in my own work I need the former all the time, and have never needed the the latter (though they are interesting instruments!). Obviously not all instruments can be included, but some omissions do catch my attention:
Eb clarinet
Bass flute
Concert tom-toms
Bongos
Roto-toms
String harmonics
Solo viola
Solo bass
I am curious what others think about the instruments in the pro set, a discussion which naturally leads to the question of what people do with VSL samples. I, for example, am a composer of orchestral and chamber music which is intended for the concert hall. I use VSL samples for previewing my work and for trying out ideas, rather than preparing finished work.
What do others do? What instruments are you looking for?
Who works in a notation program such as Finale, and how do you solve the problem of moving back and forth between Logic and your scoring program?
Best wishes,
Michael Matthews
