  • Concerning Ports, and channels!

    Hi!

I'm 100% new here, so I need some advice from you all. [[;)]]

Is there some way to load an entire .gig file to one (1) channel in a port in Gigastudio? I noticed there are pink buttons that change the way the
instrument is played. Is this a short command so that you won't have to load all the different samples into different channels, and thus saving a LOT of space? (And channel jumping in Cubase SX)

I only use Cubase SX and soon I realised that all of the instruments when placed on separate channels really take up a lot of space! It's almost out of control. [[:|]]

Any suggestion on how to use the .gig librarys? Should I place each specific playingstyle on a separate channel, or should I look for the libraries with pink buttons and learn how to use them?

Maybe these special playingstyles were just meant to place in separate channels when you need a particular style very frequently.

Help me plz, and instruct me on how to set up the libraries in Gigastudio, to make it easier handling them in Cuvase SX

    Absolutley the Best Regards [:D]

  • I just realised that there are almost allways a subdirectory in each .gig
    that consists of "instrument_all"

This was a really small yet great discovery, and it help me organize a LOT faster, and test the libraries. [H]

Sometimes there arn't though but it's 10^10 times easier to handle now.

Plz give me suggestions on how to set up my instruments in gigastudio.

Even the least of hints can be of great help to me.

  • Everyone seems to have a different way of setting things up...

I personally found it helpful to start off with a template in the sequencer with 2 tracks for every instrumental part, altenately legato (with the performance tool set up appropriately) and 'freestyle': flute 1_leg; flute 1; flute 2_leg; flute 2, etc. Certainly I wouldn't start setting up much of a template in Gigastudio, more in the sequencer, and use patch changes to get the right instruments to load into GS. That way you get more use out of the ports available.

I use legato a lot, so this made sense for me. Where I need other articulations I record into the 'freestyle' channels, inserting patch changes as appropriate. Personally I find this much easier than having hundreds of midi tracks for each instrument. I managed to work it out so that the WWs fit onto port 1, brass on port 2, strings on port 3, and port 4 is perc. and spare for extras, such as if I end up with repetitions or whatever.
In practice GS fills up on the one machine and I start loading a 2nd and then a third, but still keeping to more-or-less this layout.

But this is just what I've come up with for now - I'm sure these things grow and adapt over time.

I'd be interested too to see what others suggest...

Good luck and enjoy the library,

    Simon

  • Thanks a bunch Simon! I'm going to try what you said. I'm not sure how to make Cubase "load" instruments into the right channels of Gigastudio.

Can anyone fill me in on how to do this?

  • Moderator,

Is this not a thread more appropriate to the Gigastudio forum?

    Thanks,

  • I'm curious how others are setting up their templates as well. I usually use one articulation per midi channel, which i guess is a holdover from GS 2.2, which didn't preserve patch #s. The downside is of course that I'm left with a lot of midi tracks in my sequencer to keep track of.

  • I don't like patch changes. No offense to people who do, of course, but to me they're a big nuisance to keep track of.

If you're using Logic, one way to deal with all the instruments is to use regular instruments rather than multi-instruments in the Environment. Each instrument - with its icon - is then pointed where you want it. So an icon labeled "vlns short" could be assigned to one Giga machine/port/channel, one labeled "vlns pizz" could point at an EXS instrument somewhere else, etc.

When you want to use these instruments, you use a split Screenset (if you only have one monitor - I have the windows on separate monitors) with the Arrange window on the left and the Environment layer with the icons on the right. Highlighting the track in the Arrange window and command/clicking on the instrument you want in the Environment assigns it to the track.

You can also use separate Environment layers for different templates.
